WQID/WVMI Video

Awesome post! Thank you for sharing the link! WQID, not only did they rock the coast, they where no less than a class act! Can't say that about there successors in the old QID building on Debuys Rd.

Years ago I made mention of buidling a WQID tribute web site and it generated much talk. Unfourtnuately I'm not the tech type that can build a website deserving of QID's legacy, but I hope someone out there can help such a tribute site come about!

Thanks again for the link and flashback to the good days of Coast radio!

I thought you would like it. I re-established contact with Bob after I saw the youtube video and it was great playing catchup with him. I remember your post from a couple of years ago and I'm still toying with the idea of starting a internet station with the 94qid calls. The WQID calls seem to be owned by an urban station in Hattiesburg, but I think we would be ok calling it 94qid. If there's enough interest, let me know, and I'll try to get in touch with some of the old jocks and see if we can do something. KM

Any chance we could get an LPFM allocation near Biloxi for this?

(Probably not, since 93.3, 93.7, 94.1, 94.5, 94.9, and 95.3 are all in local or semi-local use.)

You could call it 94QID all you want, but it wouldn't be anywhere near 93.7 on the dial, and the calls couldn't be WQID unless the Hattiesburg LPFM gave them up... sorry guys.

As for open LPFM possibilities for Biloxi or Gulfport, I'm thinking 103.5 might work or maybe 106.3? Every other channel I can think of is first, second, or third adjacent to something else...

Bob Lima, in my opinion, was the best radio mind I have ever had the pleasure of knowing (and watching in action). He is one of a kind. Does anyone know where he and Stella currently reside?

Yes, he's now retired and living in Florida.

Thanks for your kind words. WQID/WVMI always can be remembered for it's staff, both on and off the air.

Give me a holler if you like.

Bob Lima

Were those stations not owned by the Holliday family at the time?

How did 'VMI end up going to Triad and 'QID end up going to CC? Seems like the combo would have been sold together.

Wow...
Glad I stumbled across that. I grew up listening to WQID. I eventually worked there as an announcer for about 3 years and to say I had fun would be an understatement. I learned a lot about radio from Bob, Mickey, and others there. I still constantly run across people on the Gulf Coast that remember and ask me about those days. They eventually changed the name to Magic, but the real "magic" was and always will be 94QID! I have tons of old audio that perhaps I can post someday, but totally enjoyed the video!

Hey Ken, Kevin Michaels here. Glad to see you're still around. I'm on the Coast this week for a conference. Went out for dinner last night and the owner of the restaurant came up and started talking about the days of QID/VMI. Guess it will always live on!

Hello Kevin... good to hear from another Q alumni. Those were some pretty good days. Still run into lots of people who remember.

This tansaction went down before dereg and QID ended up in the hands of Starr Broadcasting via an LMA. VMI went independent for a few years before being absorbed into Gulf Coast Radio Partners/Triad. Incidently, at the same time VMI was bought Triad also bought WCPR and as a result 92.5 was booted out of there stable to ownership limits.
That is the genesis of how Q92.5 came about.

Visited Bob Lima's very nice radio site over the weekend. He has added some more VMI/QID goodies :) Also sent him an e-mail thanking him for making QID work for all those years and recieved a short but nice reply from the man himself.

One of the additions are some old WLOX stories on QID and coast radio in general.
(Seeing that old set design with the harbor backdrop brought back memories). Good stuff, please check out when you can.

One question, in one of the LOX pieces it shows a billboard for WGCM-FM branded as Majic 102. This was before the brand change to Coast 102, so what format did Majic have? Big Band stuff I'm guessing.

I wouldn't call it Big Band. The official name was "Adult Contemporary". If I remember right, WGCM and it's sister station, WTAM, swapped frequencies, WTAM to 1240AM and WGCM to 102.3FM. They renamed WGCM "Majic". It didn't last long and WGCM went rock shortly thereafter.

How long was it rock before the transition to oldies?

Hey, I admit the memory is a little fuzzy but Magic on WGCM must have been earlier. Actually WTAM was Urban and WGCM country when I first arrived. New owners (Holts) came in and AM went to classic country with former WVMI DJ Ted White programming and and 102.3 went contemporary or hot country for a while with me under another name as DJ and PD. Then we went down the AOR road and changed call sign to WTKI and TK102 was hatched. (anyone remember the TK Bitch for Gulfport Mayor?) I think I programmed TK for about a year and then was transfered over to WTKX TK101 in Pensacola and programmed both stations for a while. 102.3 was eventually sold to Munez until Dowdy got it and went back to WGCM calls becoming Coast 102.
