Yes, it was good to see the efforts put forth at WEJZ result in a great book. But let's tell it like it really is. WEJZ is really the only game in town. And given WSOS's limited coverage being a competitor of sorts for the office/retail store crowd they have returned to where they should have been all along.
I wouldn't call myself a vulture as my past comments regarding WEJZ recognized trouble ahead - even before the numbers took a downward spiral. They needed to pick up the pace and not just go through the motions which was really taking their audience for granted. In many cases, good numbers are earned and there has to be a fire to want to win. And while I feel like I'm talking to myself on this board sometimes, I'm happy they are doing well. I have always liked the station and a lot of elements to the format.
But the other gem in the Renda cluster is WSOS. I wish the station could be a bigger player in the scheme of things. They have got it together. Cudos to the person who programs the music. It's not often that I experience wow radio moments but I just have to share this with the board. The other night as I was making my way home, I heard two personal favorites back-to-back. "One Hundred Ways" by Quincy Jones and "That's the Way of the World" by Earth, Wind and Fire." Man, it doesn't get any smoother than that. I had to circle around the block a few times as I couldn't shut the radio off. Yep, a radio junkie I am. And A.J. Davis, do keep up the great work. I really enjoy your style. Renda Broadcasting has some great players here in Jax and A.J. is tops in my book.
Gator will continue to do well as Jax will eventually be a two Country music station town. I'm really curious to see how the competing morning shows of WQIK and WGNE fare in the books ahead. It will be interesting to watch.
And so while some may think I was a Renda basher, on the contrary I wanted them to succeed. With the exception of Movin', which I believe is a mistake for this market, Renda is positioned well here and they have earned their success in this book.
