WQLL?

Did we have a WQLL around Louisville at some point? I want to say we did. "Cool" something.

I have a CD with those call letters on it. It sounds familiar, but I can't find those call letters ever existing around here.

Ha. OK, it was one my my own stations, WRKA, as shown on the WRKA Wikipedia page Thank you DW for pointing that out to me.

Interestingly, that page says they used those call letters for 2 years, but the FCC database doesn't indicate that at all. I suspect they never legally changed them.

The M Street Directory from 1995 shows 103.9 as WQLL. That would mean, at minimum, the FCC granted them those calls. The 1996 M Street Directory shows 103.9 as WQLL, too.

I have noticed occasional holes in the call letter histories of stations at the FCC website. That would be my guess.

BTW - I just checked David's site, and the M Street Journal from 7-7-94 shows WHKW 103.9 was granted WQLL on 6-29-94.

Well good on them. At the time, the station was owned by George Owen, and LMA'ed to Jacor. Balls get dropped in such situations.

Thanks for the info.

What I remember about 103.9 is that it was Christian WXLN until 1990 when it became "Kiss 104" WZKS. Next up was "New Country 103.9" and after some time calls were changed to WHKW "The Hawk". When 107.7 went on the air WHKW moved there. That's when WQLL started and at first were oldies and then all '70's. After all of the sales and moves in 1996 the 103.9 format moved to 107.7 and became "Super Star 107.7" WSFR. Not too long after the move it became "Classic Rock 1077 SFR".
103.9 then became WSJW "Smooth Jazz" and many more formats after that! Hot A/C, All 80's, Country (again), The Hawk (again), and now Urban A/C.

That's pretty accurate, though many of the format changes you remember were slight tweaks and rebranding. It was a country station for 15 years straight, 4 years as New Country and 11 years as classic country. Cox bought it on May 5, 1999. Here are the switches I remember. I was present for all of them except the switch from Smooth Jazz to Mix.

WMHX Mix 1039 from Smooth Jazz in about 1997.
1039 The Point, the Best of the 80s and More in the fall of 2000.
New Country 1039 in about 2004.
Country Legends 1039 in July 2008
1039 The Hawk - July 2014
1039 The Groove Jan 2019
