WQLS Q101 (circa 1982) - where is this station based out of?

Hey all - I recently found an album to add to my site and was hoping someone could help me identify where this station was based out of.

WQLS "Q101" (1982).

The album is a homegrown "Rock to Riches" album - highlighting local bands, including:

Overland
Ralph Flynn
Boys at Heart
Mirage
Neighbors and Grant
Meryln
Paradox
J.C. Byles
Mirage
Nite Owl

I can't seem to find any information on this station, zip, zero, nothing. Was this a Birmingham-based station? Anyone on here who used to work for that station and can give me a bit of info? Thanks in advance!
 
I remember the old Q101 WQLS (100.7). The station was licensed to Cleveland, TN, and had a large coverage area with its 100kw signal. The transmitter was on White Oak Mtn. just north of where I-75 crossed into Bradley County, TN, near Chattanooga. I believe the format was a hybrid AOR/AC. The station evolved into US-101 WUSY in 1983 and has been one of the top rated country stations in the nation for years.

Later, as US-101, the transmitter was moved to Signal Mountain near Chattanooga, but the city of license remains Cleveland to this day.

I have been familiar with WUSY for a while now. For some reason though, when I was about 7 or 8 I thought it was "US 100.1" Then when I was 11 or 12 I started hearing US 101 . They still have a good signal though. I can hear them sometimes here in Cullman County when those useless NPR translators near HSV don't interfere. Most days, US 101 can be heard at Cades Cove, about 120 miles from Choo Choo near the TN-NC state line.

BTW, was there at one time a country station on 100.1 near Chattanooga?

It's always been US-101 since the sign-on in '83. They usually say, "At 100.7 FM this is US-101 WUSY Cleveland/Chattanooga" for the top of the hour ID.

96.5 WDOD is the only other 100kw Chattanooga station which ran a country format for a number of years from the 70s through the late 90s. They ran a brief stint as Top 40 "D-96" in the late 70s to compete with KZ-106 (WSKZ 106.5), but quickly switched back to country. The station was AAA "The Mountain" from 1997 until this year when they flipped to Top-40/CHR and kept "The Mountain" moniker. I know Birmingham also has a 100kw stick at 96.5 and both signals play havoc on an FM receiver if you travel on I-59 in DeKalb County, AL.

I agree with you on the translators. I live near Huntsville now and there are many translators and LPFMs which destroy any chance of out-of-town listening. I remember in the late 70s how quiet the noise floor was on FM. You could routinely hear the stronger FM stations 130 miles away with an outdoor antenna. Nowadays, many translators and LPFMs have almost ruined DXing on the FM band.

Take a listen to this 1973 aircheck from Atlanta at this link: http://airchexx.com/markets/atlanta/atlanta-fm-composite-fm-73-august-1973 You actually hear a sample of WBBQ-FM in Augusta. This was recorded in Atlanta which is over 120 miles away from Augusta.

To answer your question about 100.1, the only station on 100.1 close to Choo Choo is a station licensed to Talking Rock, GA. They have a rimshot signal into Atlanta and ran an oldies format as "Sunny 100" for a number of years. Last I heard, the station is now Spanish.

Not sure about that one but, If anyone would know It woukd be Ken Michels @ wvsu . He has been in radio in birmingham all his life It is his hometown, and can share some great radio stories too. Scotty Morgan caribou me.

A friend of mine from Auburn, Alabama used to own it...Just thought

you might like to know...
