WQMR Drops Talk For Rock

After half a dozen years as a conservative-oriented talk outlet, 101.1 WQMR has dropped the format in favor of a rock playlist, and has adopted the new branding of Q101:

The station, however, is retaining two holdovers from its talk format: a local program titled "Power Talk," co-hosted by the station owner; and Mancow's syndicated morning show. (Incidentally, the flagship station for Mancow's Chicago-based show for many years was also called "Q101".)

Life is tough for a dingy little class A on the fringes of a vastly over-radioed market. Online they sound like they're doing a Jack-type format. This sort of thing has been tried on 92.5 (a rock-ish version of it, anyway) and 107.7. Didn't work for either one of those stations, and I don't see it working for the lesser-signaled 101.1 either.

They'd be smart to take one of the formats being displaced by K-Love when K-Love takes over 92.1 and 105.5. If one of the bigger stations doesn't beat them to it, Oldies would work as 101.3 and 107.1 don't make it anywhere close to Ocean City.

I'm surprised no one at Clear Channel has objected to this station calling itself Q101 when CC runs Q105 in the Ocean City-Salisbury market.
Granted, the 101 signal isn't strong into OC, but isn't a little too close for comfort, especially in a diary market?
To make matters worse, today I see that they're using "Fresh" along with "Q." Fresh is a key adult contemporary identifier these days. That could really cause some diary confusion.

Same thing happened years back when Kiss 100 in Philadelphia changed to Z-100. They were then forced to change to Y-100 because WHTZ, Z-100 NY filed a lawsuit against them. It will not be long before CC makes them change. Why is the Q-101 signal so bad in OC? Where is the tower?

This station has been listed for sale a long time but it was way over priced. That station is only worth about 150,000. Kiss FM just sold for around 200,000 same for 92.1 The WAVE.

Is WQMR using a satellite delivered format? Or is the production just that cheap? The quirky "Jack" styled liners sound like what used to be on the "SAM" format from Dial Global. But no Jack or Sam are mentioned. However, notice how anything local such as the station ID or anything saying "Q101" sounds cheaply dubbed in, or separated from anything else said.

WQMR is the older style 3000 watt class A, but they decided to go to about 500 feet on the tower, which means that the power is weaker in Ocean City and Salisbury. The tower is located a few miles northeast of Snow Hill. The also have a problem with ducting from DC 101 at times, and they have a very close 1st adjacent on 100.9 in Hrurlock, Maryland and 101.3 in Milford, Delaware.
Finally, on the peninsula, about 420 feet is the sweet spot. Thats where WTDK in Federalsburg and WGMD in Rehoboth Beach happen to be.
