I was flipping the dial last week and came upon WQQQ; what is their so called format?? Sounded like a train wreck. Who does morning drive????

thanks

A man by the name of Joe Lovero(spelling?) does the morning show i believe. He's been with WQQQ for many years and been in radio since college. WQQQ is one of the many Dennis Jackson success stories.

Dennis very successfully blends live and local content... as well as using automation. The communities always love his stations and usually have a huge following.

I had the opportunity to see the studios of WMEX-Fm and chat with one of their guys... they certainly know what their doing.

"Dennis Jackson success story"?!?!?!? You've gotta be kidding! Please tell me what station(s) of his are "success stories"....WMEX barely shows up in either the Portsmouth or Concord-Lakes books. Judging by the spot load they carry, they aren't exactly raking it in either. Not sure I've ever heard any live programming on any of the stations he programs outside of a really small-market sounding morning show...otherwise it's just a bunch of generic voicetracks rather badly implemented...sounds like automated radio circa 1974. :'( :'(

I happen to know, generally speaking, what some of Dennis' stations are doing... and all I can/will say is that if their revenue is any clue, they are definately doing something right.

Morning drive sounded awful....who's the clown doing morning drive?? If it was Ron Lyon, it's no wonder it sounded bad...I'm surprised the owner would get involved with this guy with his track record..... ???

Well, some would certainly differ with your observations, which, of course, adds to the fun of discussions here on the board.

When Dennis started WRIP in Windham, New York the community greeted him with open arms. The station is very much a success story with local news, information, music and the like. It's been written up in a few radio journals with positive comments throughout. Sure, the station may be voicetracked a chuck of the time - so what? Did you know Star 99.9 is voicetracked during the middays? One of their staff told me this so don't think your favorite station of yours isn't voicetracked as it very well could be!

WQQQ may not be the finest example of Dennis Jackson's local radio successes, but I've heard a number of his stations on-air as well as seeing what they have done in the past. I don't think having local community involvement while being cost effective by utilizing automation is something to be looked down upon.

Oldbones, do you own any stations? How's your cash flow? Community Involvement? I think Dennis and his staff have done a decent job of splitting the difference between serving the community and controlling his own costs along with a product that's quite listenable.

I would second what Bill said. I basically agree with him, he just said it better then I did.

Hmm quite the yes man, aren't we??? The original question was WQQQ...maybe they like it because there's nothing else; that makes for mediocre radio.....

Still didn't get my answer.... ??

By the way, Paul...how many radio jobs have you had???

I'm hardly a yes man.

I just happen to think Dennis is a good business man and has some wonderful employees working for him.

It's interesting read opinions on this board. Everybody has one. As a proud WQQQ staffer, let me say this. We have very wide acceptance in the communities we serve. I suppose some people think "good radio" is the same 500 tunes over and over. We serve our communities in many ways, with a small staff we managed to raise over $ 32,000.00 with our Sunday In The Country Food Drive. That's a LOT of money for a small area. We have shown on the ratings in the Poughkeepsie NY book 12+ for the past couple of years, with one of the largest TSL's of any station listed, especially in Morning Drive! Not an easy feat for a small station "on the fringe" of the market.
We have listeners in Kingston, Hyde Park, New Milford, etc, who choose us over their more local stations. Our community service is second to none, and you hear us on in businesses all over the region. Our music choices are broader than most stations of our type, but I consider this a good thing! People
Dennis Jackson knows how to put together a great team of radio pros and make the most of the stations potential. I have worked in major markets, and have never had as much fun putting together a product, that, obviousely not favored by everyone, is enjoyed by a whole lot of folks relative to our population.
On our daily interviews in morning drive, we manage to score major guests like Dean Koontz the author on a regular basis. We may break rules, but its so much fun to do when it works so well!!!
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL, like us or not

Phillies Fan, it is very refreshing to read a post like yours; from someone involved with the station. I thinks it incredibly awesome that you are able to do such good things with the station. It would be great if more programmers joined the various conversations here.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to YOU and YOURS as well...Hope to read more from you!

By the way, I heard one of Dennis' stations not only met their sales goal, but far exceeded it and set a new record

All this, while Clear channel didn't even meet their goals and will be firing some sales people.. Hmm, I wonder who's doing better.. WMEX-FM or Clear Channel Portsmouth/Dover/ROchester? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

WQQQ has one of the funniest , local yocal show in CT--sunday in the country. I dont know who these guys are always busting on but when I tune in it feels like I know them all. Its very similar to a bad car wreck dont want to look but cant keep your eyes off of it! What other station has such a wide varitey of listeners? they raise money for familes in need on several occassions--- I think the sunday show fed somewhere around 3000 people over the holidays? sounds like a sucess story to me. Clear channel radio are you kidding??? when was the last time they were community minded?----- Dennis has done a great job with q103, to bad all small communities didnt have the same type stations!!!
