WQSV signing off

Many years ago, I got roped into consulting and eventually managing (or attempting to manage) WQSI-AM up in that there Portland, TN. That was like 30 plus years ago, when Chris Romer was underage still. That was during the Bob Hudson years and ended up dealing with WBDX-AM in White Bluff, as well. Two miserable fiascos at the time. Interestingly enough, I was looking at the website for the Portland AM just yesterday! And I haven't seen, visited or thought much about Portland or White Bluff since the early 80s. The name Corky Albright rings a bell from the White Bluff/Dickson days. Can't say I remember meeting him etc. 44 years, many in AM radio. Talk about swimming upstream.

I think Delta worked up in Portland for a while. Anyone want to venture on how that Portland AM is doing?

Oh I could write a book on that station...and it's many owners..Before Hudson got it..I was the last one out the door when it went dark..left a note on the front desk along with my keys..and locked the door...He acquired it in some form..and hired my to come back...First check bounced..200.00...I still have it somewhere..lol..I worked there from 1980-1984 I think...We did pretty good when Jack Hunter and I were dealing with it..but an out of state owner, suddenly vanished without a trace, his address was found to be a vacant lot in Mississippi.....the IRS shows up to padlock the place..I was able to cut a deal with them while it was under lien to keep it on the air...man what a ride..the stories are way to long to type out here..maybe sometime over a few beers..lol Le Dorman is running it now..after Ron Simpson who was able to buy it, passed away several years ago..they are very local, as one might expect with low power..studios I think are still upstairs in a building on main street..I'll finish by saying it was sold at public auction for property taxes after Hudson, and the buyer had to sit on it for two years and keep the taxes current..at the end of two years..he would own it ..everything..building station, equipment..he had strong contacts with the fcc..so getting the license would have been no problem...not a word was heard from the three banks holding paper on it in that two year period until 4:25 pm on the very last day..when a representative of one bank shows up and pays off all debts outstanding...Almost had the station for less than 2500.00 in taxes...what is it Maxwel Smart said.."Missed it by THAT much'..

Yep..but she was there after my check bounced..and I didn't return..never met her...I worked one week..and when the check didn't clear...I didn't go back...

That sounds familiar....the other phrase that didn't pay was "that won't play in Peoria." It didn't for me AT ALL really quickly, too!

Whatever happened to that deal that Corky had going with hispanic interests to sell the station to them a year or two ago? Or has AM radio fallen so far that even hispanic broadcasters don't want AM stations anymore?

apparently my theory was wrong: checked WQSV again mid-afternoon on Sunday, and
it was gone. Guess there was no harm in clearing the final 'preacher features'...

Sunday June 9...10:40am...still on the air. Shocker.
Are you sure that that was WQSV? I was listening at about that same time (from Bellevue) and heard nothing.

wqsv is still on 2 hours before they were to shut down and they are still on full power.
Why wouldn't they be still on before they were to shut down? ???
They were scheduled to shut down at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday evening. But they remained on the air past that time, with their usual diet of bluegrass, shifting over to oldies. When we went to bed Saturday night, they were still on.

Knowing what I do about Corky, I wouldn't put it past him to threaten to shut down, just to try to breathe new life into his station, and get some listeners back.

There were times last week when I tuned in and didn't hear anything, leading me to believe that maybe he had pulled the plug early, but evidently, that was not the case.

yeah...pretty sure it was WQSV...as I was getting the same signal strength on the same radio at the same location: only other stations on 790 'nearby" are Memphis, Louisville, Atlanta, Johnson City, and Tuscaloosa

AM 560 should buy the license from Corky Albright, then get W. Hairston or G. Brown (knowledgable AM FCC engineer types) to move it to the unused tower at 1200 and rent from Bill Barry. 2,500 watts in Nashville market with little cost should be able to pay the light bill wouldn't you think? AND the signal would still cover A. City!

My source told me that they were still on at 8:30 Sunday morning because they still owed an apparently already paid-for broadcast to a preacher at that time. They were indeed off the air by the time I tuned in and heard nothing.

At any rate, it would be counter-productive (not to mention illegal!) to sell airtime to a potential broadcaster if you didn't even plan to still be on the air by the time that that broadcast was scheduled to air! Particularly if you put the word out that you would already be off the air by then! But, hey, they ran promos on Saturday night for Corky's morning program, a program that would (by that time) never air again.

It's AM radio. This would be nothing more than rearranging deck chairs on a sinking ship.
