WQTW 1570

Didn't know it was off. How long has it been off?

That's another station with an ancient transmitter...parts for it aren't easy to come by.

WQTW had its tower blown down during the spring storms. It was impossible for tower crew to work due to the moist ground (the mud bog). They have been back on since June with new tower and about a year ago they bought a new solid state transmitter.

(lol)...Wow, when I was the PD there in 1980-81, I would have given a few choice body parts for a new tower and solid state transmitter!! God luck to Stan.

Wasn't that the original tower they had since sign-on? At any rate, good for Stan. You gotta love insurance!

That indeed was the original guy supported square tower with four guy anchors that was fabercated in Latrobe in 1951

@Parttime: Terry Miller was after me. Chris Corvello (aka Christie Banks) preceeded me in the job. Yes, the daughter ofthen station owner Nick Corvello and she hired me, thereby giving me my first radio gig. She's currently APD at Sunny 104.3 in West Palm Beach.

Did you hire Renee Pike (McRae)? She was an old college friend of mine... when I went for the interview, it turned out it was to replace her (although she was still there) and when Miller found out we were friends I never heard from him again....

I'm glad you brought this topic up.

What is the format of the station?

While searching the net, I've seen conflicting reports of the real format.

Do they use their nightine authorazation? It is listed as planned on the fcc site.

Radio-locator shows them as a daytime only operation.

I believe that WQTW is back to simulcasting WLSW in Scottdale (Connellsville), with local polkas and oldies shows on the weekends. They've done the simulcast for close to 20 years now...they've had operators that leased the facilities and put on independent programming, but weren't able to make a go of it. Add into the mix a very strong in-town competitor, WCNS.

The current owner tried to make a go of separate formats again a couple years ago, oldies, and then classic country. It didn't work.

But the station is licensed 24/7 and has been since 1989. They're 1000 watts during the day and 224 watts at night, and to my knowledge they're on the air 24/7.

I saw the name Nick Corvello a few posts back having been owner at WQTW in Latrobe...There was a very popular jock of that name back in the early 60's on WBOY in Clarksburg,WV..He worked the "Sky Castle" over the Ellis Drive In Restaurant...My questions are is Nick Corvello still alive and if so where is he.

I ask because I am the administrator of a Facebook Group of Clarksburg Radio People from back in the day and I am trying to locate a few...Nick Corvello's name comes up frequently in discussion.

William "Bill mohonay" [Not sure of spelling] Worked at WHAR in the 1970's, Is he on Your Page. He started at WCVI when I was at WLSW. We Both Grew up in Lawrenciville and went to Schenley High.

I can not find the rhyme or reason to it but WQTW is definitely separate from WLSW a good portion of the time. I have heard "16Q" jingles and liners mixed in with a very diverse playlist of automated 60s/70s oldies and 80's softer a/c songs.

Bill Mahoney in the early 70's jumped from 1340 WCVI to 1340 WHAR....He remained with WHAR and their FM 92.7 WVHF right up until early 2000 except for about one year in 1975-1976 when he went to WCIR in Beckley,WV...In about 2005 his health deteriorated with the end result being 3 strokes...He is now in a Nursing Home and the likelihood of any recovery is very dim.

It's showing as "pending" for Canada, so I don't think a planned station is licensed.

I did not hire Renee Pike, at least I don't remember if I did..it WAS 31 years ago (!)

Also, to answer another poster...Nick Corvello has been gone for a while now.
