WQTW was licensed for 220 watts night time. Now they're only licensed for 1000 watts daytime ,no night service at all.what happened ?
 
I don't see any night authorization for them in the FCC data, but an STA for operating 220 watts daytime, due to equipment problems was granted on 8/3/2017. What I can find in the FCC files is they went on the air in 1952 as a 250 watt non directional day-timer and in 1955 increased power to 1kw. I see they were authorized a 346 watt pre-sunrise in 1970 that was reduced to 300 watts in 1972. No record of any directional or night operation.
 
Back in 1986 the FCC had a Computer program that looked to add night service to AM Daytimer's. They also looked at the Canadian (locally 540 ,860,940,1550 )and Mexican (1570 )clear channel's. The results were called Plan. A letter was sent to each Station letting them know how much if any power they could use at night. Locally 680/50 watts,730 /24 watts , 860 /12.5 watts, 910/69 watts, 940/5 watts, 1050/65 watts, 1080 / 10 watts, (did not use), 1150 / 70 watts, 1380 /38 watts, 1550 /4 watts, 1570 /220 watts, 1590/ 69 watts. They are Not listed in the history Cards but under Plan in the CBDS tab.I have listened to WQTW at night in New Stanton. And night service was listed in the FCC site until this past Year.
 
WCNS 1480 has purchased 97.9 W250AU Jeanette with 10 watts, WQTW 1570 has an application for a new station on 97.9 with 250 watts from their tower in Latrobe. Both stations in Latrobe on the same Frequency?
 
That station has been operating with a transmitter that's been limping along for years. They can't get parts for it anymore, and Stan probably decided it wasn't worth shoveling that kind of coin into a new box for a station that was doing the level of business it was. Now that Bob Stevens owns it, it'll likely get that new transmitter and they'll be off that STA. Bob won't buy a station unless he knows he can make money with it...and right now, he's about the only small market operator in this area that's turning a real profit.
 
If I'm looking at this correctly it looks like 97.9 is moving to Appollo possibly trading with 98.7 w254cr. Meaning WAVL 910/97.9, WCNS 1480/98.7. But it still 19 miles between WQTW site and the new site for 97.9?
 
That sounds about right. I see both FM antennas being highly directionalized, and the terrain between Apollo and Latrobe is rather rugged. You have lots of hills in the New Alexandria/Derry area that separates them quite nicely. Cutting it close...very close.
