WQVA 1170 AM Lexington to be sold

WQVA has been in receivership after being foreclosed upon by Peregon Communication's lender, BB&T.

The receiver has filed to transfer the license for WQVA to John and Eric Broomfield of Greenwood, SC, where they own and operate an FM AC station and AM Oldies station. The reported price for the 10kw AM daytimer: $50,000.

Chump change. But I do hate to see frequencies sitting silent. Well, Dude Fan, as you said earlier, they will need an FM translator to make a go of it. I wish them well but the whole thing sounds like a long-shot.

Sarcasticaly: I wonder if the new metric for AM daytimers will be 1x monthly power bill.

Ooooh! That's harsh. But it would be different.

Those of us who are "fans" of broadcasting seem to automatically have that feeling about a cold, silent transmitter.

But maybe those of us who are "fans" of broadcasting can develop another emotion about dark stations. One of the problems of radio can be described by saying too many operators assume all radio stations are indestructible. If the operators of radio stations can get it into their psyche that radio stations are indeed candidates for failure, they might feed and care for them better.

You know..... (hate that term!) like the guys in their 40s down at the gym that have had their light heart attack. Whole new attitude toward staying fit. Almost makes you wish that every station owner had to drive past one transmitter site with tumbleweeds blown up against the tower on their way to work each day.

What is the equivalent of putting a radio station on the treadmill?

Operators for soooo long got used to their properties as being nothing more than an endless ATM. Money magically came out, even when no deposits were made. The caring and tending isn't even happening now after lessons should have been learned. The AM band is dangerously close to collapse due to the migration of News-Talk to FM. It won't be a factor within 10 years IMHO. I guess you all have probably surmised that yourselves.

Broomfield's FM is AC and the AM is Black Gospel, before that it was sports. It hasn't been oldies in a few years. That 1090 really gets out.

I wonder if JB's former "John FM" will return...as "John AM"? ;D

As of 11/12/10 at 300am in the morning, 1170am is currently playing an Oldies format under the "1170 the Deck". The station is now using call letters WDEK.

WOW!!! That is interesting that WDEK has made it's way to SC since they use to be up here in IL IE WDEK FM back in the day up until it was changed to WCPT... Kinda funny to see them down south now... CC1

anything happening with 1200 am WJES that has been silent...was owned before by Big Fish broadcasting?

Can somebody see if 1170 in Lexington is signing off at sunset like they are supposed to? I hear them here in Central Alabama after sunset identifying themselves as "The Deck". I am hearing a spanish station booming in tonight on 1170? Could that be WDEK also?

WDEK was in fact transmitting (probably illegally) at night for a few weeks. They have stopped doing that. The spanish station on 1170 you heard recently was not WDEK.

What is interesting that a restaurant here in Lexington called the "Flight Deck" has their LED sign outside promoting "1170 The Deck". I'll have to ask the owner next time I in there to eat if he has any ownership with the new station.

I've yet to hear a single advertisement on WDEK

P.S. - I do recommend the Flight Deck as a good restaurant. And it's airplane memorabilia is second to one.

LOL ... delete the word probably! I called my friend at the FCC and he said he would find out who owned what and would get them to fix the remote. I now know the spanish station was not WDEK, but the way it jumped in, I thought it was, and yes so far I have not heard a commercial either.

The reason the station is being promoted on the Flight Deck signage is the studios are located in the Flight Deck shopping center. They are simulcasting at 107.9 FM. They are saying they are Beach, Boogie, Blues and Jazz. But yesterday I heard a Culture Club song and Aretha Franklin's "Think". But it was not the original version it was her remake for a later soundtrack. Pretty weird.

I noticed that 107.9 and 1170 are not simulcasting. I found out 107.9 is actually a LP station known as WLXM owned by Lake Murray Broadcasting. It sounds like a variety hits format, but I have heard NO station Id's. When I tuned to 1170, I heard the beach, boogie, and blues format.
