WRAT counterprogramming to G Rock Radio?

B

Burnett

Guest
Take this for what it's worth. I read a previous thread about stations catering to men and women. And strangely enough tonight (Friday 12:30am), I heard a segment of music on WRAT that virtually crushes any theory of them being a "male driven station."

I heard 3 Doors Down "Let Me Go", followed by Finger Eleven "One Thing", followed by Default "Count On Me." Last time I checked, ALL THREE artists were/are staples at other formats that are female-oriented, including Top 40.

Now, I pose the question - is this perhaps a programming decision based on countering WHTG/WBBO and their last ratings success? Maybe trying to find a way to get back some of the people which G Rock took from them?

On an aside, anyone have thoughts to how the ratings will turn up when this period is over?

I know it's alot of questioning, but I leave it open to the forum.

Well, do you like these songs, or not? You seem to be taking a pot-shot at WRAT for making their playlist too "girly", but in all your analysis, you never actually state whether or not you find anything wrong with that.

I don't know about the Default song, but "Let Me Go" into "One Thing" just sounds like poor music scheduling.

I think you might have caught them at a bad time, because the music log posted on All Access's version of Mediabase today looks like a typical Active Rock station:

3:03 AM DISTURBED Stricken 2005 C
3:07 AM BLACK SABBATH Fairies Wear Boots 1970 G
3:13 AM STAIND Right Here 2005 R
3:17 AM FOO FIGHTERS My Hero 1997 G
3:21 AM STAPP, SCOTT The Great Divide 2005 C
Stop Set BREAK Commercials And/Or Recorded Promos
3:28 AM VAN HALEN Right Now 1991 G
3:33 AM MUDVAYNE Forget To Remember 2005 C
3:37 AM NIRVANA Lake Of Fire 1994 G
3:40 AM AUDIOSLAVE Be Yourself 2005 R
Stop Set BREAK Commercials And/Or Recorded Promos
3:48 AM AC/DC Thunderstruck 1990 G
3:53 AM STONE TEMPLE PILOTS Wicked Garden 1993 G
3:57 AM DOORS L.A. Woman

If you read my analysis, I said my opinion had nothing to do with it. It was an observation that I made.

BUT - for the record, I DON'T like these songs.

For a station that is "active rock" - whether or not it was just a bad segment of music like Slinky said - I wouldn't have ever expected a station like WRAT to play a set of music like that.

The point of my post was to ask whether or not anyone felt that WRAT may be doing some kind of counterprogramming to WHTG. That's all. There's no "potshots."

Let's see:

WHTG & WBBO = entire market inside the station's 60dBu contour
= even your $0.99 walkman will pull in G-Rock anywhere in Monmouth or Ocean Counties

WRAT = 25% of the market can't even get the station on a CAR RADIO
= 25% of the people that CAN get the station get interference from either WBEN or WTTH

I wonder who will win...

That does kind of disappoint me, to see WRAT with such a soft, feminine selection of music. 3 Doors Down into Finger Eleven - that would be enough for me to lose my lunch. Fortunately, it seems like you just might have caught them at a bad time, as I turned them on and it's basically the same Active Rock format that we've come to expect from them. If WRAT were to tinker with their format, I really think they should go the other way instead - no one in this market is playng Slipknot, older tracks by Korn and Mudvayne, Ill Nino, etc., and I honestly believe that they could build on their audience a bit by skewing more aggressive.

On a somewhat related note - has anyone looked at G Rock Radio's list of Currents? I applaud them for being a bit more proactive in adding new music and playing some slightly more aggressive tracks (Korn, SOAD). Now, if only they could reach out to those of us who enjoyed the Retro Rocktober weekend by expanding the library a little bit...

They do play some songs that K-ROCK didn't touch last year when they were both alternative....G-ROCK also has 5 times the coverage RAT has, I live in Newark NJ and can get a clear signal of GROCK (until that annoying pirate from Bronx came on the air), while I can't get WRAT at all, or at best it is around a 2 (I have a Grundig YB400PE)
