This thread is a discussion on WRAT in addition to the upcoming RatFest '06 concert at PNC Bank Arts Center. There's no doubt that an excellent lineup has been put together this year, with Korn, Deftones, Stone Sour, Flyleaf and Japanese rockers Dir en Grey.
Now, there's no denying that this should be an excellent show, possibly the best WRAT show to date. The one thing I don't understand is this: Why are these band receiving little to no rotation on WRAT? They are playing Stone Sour's current single a good deal, but for some reason they aren't playing Deftones, Flyleaf and Diru at all! I find that to be a little strange. It seems that this station has been programmed a bit safer since Greater Media took over, even though most of the staff that has been with the station since its inception are still there. I notice they're playing a good amount of stuff that would be more at home on an AC type station (Finger Eleven's "One Thing", Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life", Seether & Amy Lee's "Broken", etc.) while not playing the likes of Sevendust, Slipknot, and other Active Rock mainstays. They're also not as aggressive on Currents as they should be. I mean, Godsmack's song "Shine Down" has been on the charts for about a month now, and WRAT has yet to add it! I like the fact that they have a strong library with a nice mix of classic and current, and it's good that they don't pound the Currents constantly, but I would like to see them play more Currents and add them quicker as well - there's really no excuse for not playing that Godsmack song by now.
As far as Korn goes, I noticed something weird that WRAT does. They play remixes of a lot of their songs for some reason, including the latest track "Coming Undone". Not sure why they do this, and the remix is far weaker than the normal version IMO.
I do listen to WRAT often, and I usually go between them and G Rock Radio at the office. Of course, all of this is intended as constructive criticism - they're both good stations, but there are ways in which they can improve. That pretty much applies to everything, when you think about it. WRAT did rebound nicely in the last book, but maybe some slight changes will help them keep this momentum.
