WRAT, Korn, & RatFest '06

This thread is a discussion on WRAT in addition to the upcoming RatFest '06 concert at PNC Bank Arts Center. There's no doubt that an excellent lineup has been put together this year, with Korn, Deftones, Stone Sour, Flyleaf and Japanese rockers Dir en Grey.

Now, there's no denying that this should be an excellent show, possibly the best WRAT show to date. The one thing I don't understand is this: Why are these band receiving little to no rotation on WRAT? They are playing Stone Sour's current single a good deal, but for some reason they aren't playing Deftones, Flyleaf and Diru at all! I find that to be a little strange. It seems that this station has been programmed a bit safer since Greater Media took over, even though most of the staff that has been with the station since its inception are still there. I notice they're playing a good amount of stuff that would be more at home on an AC type station (Finger Eleven's "One Thing", Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life", Seether & Amy Lee's "Broken", etc.) while not playing the likes of Sevendust, Slipknot, and other Active Rock mainstays. They're also not as aggressive on Currents as they should be. I mean, Godsmack's song "Shine Down" has been on the charts for about a month now, and WRAT has yet to add it! I like the fact that they have a strong library with a nice mix of classic and current, and it's good that they don't pound the Currents constantly, but I would like to see them play more Currents and add them quicker as well - there's really no excuse for not playing that Godsmack song by now.

As far as Korn goes, I noticed something weird that WRAT does. They play remixes of a lot of their songs for some reason, including the latest track "Coming Undone". Not sure why they do this, and the remix is far weaker than the normal version IMO.

I do listen to WRAT often, and I usually go between them and G Rock Radio at the office. Of course, all of this is intended as constructive criticism - they're both good stations, but there are ways in which they can improve. That pretty much applies to everything, when you think about it. WRAT did rebound nicely in the last book, but maybe some slight changes will help them keep this momentum.

The Rat is weak...they've lost me as a listener because of it.

I want to hear MY music or no music at all, so I turn on 101.5 or The Fan now. I will no longer turn on a "modern rock" station and have my intelligence insulted.

The Rat is watered down, lame, and "safe". Just coasting along hoping they don't lose any advertisers. Good Riddance.

You know what kind of station this market needs? Listen to WZBH (93.5 The Beach - http://www.wzbhrocks.com ) in Delaware or WJRR (Real Rock 101.1 - http://www.wjrr.com ) in Orlando, or even WJSE (102.7 The Ace - http://www.theace1027.com ) in the Atlantic City market. That's the type of rock station that Monmouth/Ocean needs. They play all types of rock music (including the heavier stuff that's missing in this market) with playlists that guarantee you'll very seldom hear repeats during the day.

By playing so much MOR songs, WRAT will have too much in common with G Rock Radio. Musically, I would like to see them stand out a bit more from the competition. The deep cuts and the edgy station IDs are good, but there's other ways that they can differentiate themselves - like giving Slipknot & Sevendust some spins, for starters.

????" Joe from Toms River adds, "The Rat is weak...(music wise)...they've lost me as a listener because of it...so I turn on 101.5". ????? That makes a lot of sense. Turn off some Van Halen for a nice dose of Neil Diamond? I doubt the folks over at The Rat even want him listening.

surferdude: I think he's referring to the Talk programming on 101.5, and not the music during the weekend. In particular, The Jersey Guys and Tommy G programs in the afternoon and late night respectively are quite engaging, and that's why they're one of my presets. He sounds to me like a rock fan that would like more variety and edgier music from The Rat, and unfortunately we haven't been getting it. In some ways, they're like a slightly edgier WMMR when you think about it.

Thanks. I agree the Rat is slightly edgier than WMMR too. I would not classify it as a "modern rock" station though. I think most people want to classify every station in a specific box. That's what is wrong with the business.

ummmm that tour was on the arts center calender all year! (from the korn web site) i think the rat just tagged on. pretty sure they had nothing to with actually putting it together but if they are gonna advertise it they should play the music from the bands. its ashame they dont

Last 7 days on WRAT:
Korn, Coming Undone: 17x
Stone Sour, Through Glass 28x
Flyleaf, Fully Alive: 7x

Facts, Jack.

I think they just added the Flyleaf song, and they play a weird version of "Coming Undone". It's not the album version, and it's not really a remix - it just sounds like a watered down version of the song, as if they were going for adds at Hot AC. I'm a little confused as to why they do this, but they play a lot of different mixes of Korn songs as opposed to the normal album versions.

are they doing any other korn songs? they have at least 10 over the years i can think of that can be played (im sure even more) thats what would get me ready for a show. suppose thet could play bother from stone sour too. wouldnt expect anymore from flyleaf but i would think "im so sick" would be played too

The other Korn songs I've heard on WRAT are "Make Me Bad" and "Freak On A Leash" (both in remixed versions, for reasons unknown), along with "Twisted Transistor". That's it - they're too busy playing the same old Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd songs. Nothing against those bands at all, they have both recorded great material over the years. However, sometimes you want to hear something different, because the same old thing grows tiresome after a while. Stone Sour's "Bother" gets played sometimes, and they did play "I'm So Sick" though it has permanently dropped out of their rotation, I'm sure. Nothing from Deftones, though. I'm sure if WRAT were an edgier station like 102.7 The Ace (WJSE), we would be hearing plenty of their songs. God, I wish we could get The Ace here in Ocean County. They play so much of the aggressive rock that's missing in this market. Wish Access1 would just do the right thing and swap frequencies with 103.7 WMGM, or purchase a station to simulcast it to this market.

At this point, I think this could be considered a bump...

The reason for the bump is because of two questions: Why does WRAT play more remixes of Korn songs than the originals? I especially don't understand the "Coming Undone" remix, because it's pretty weak and actually ruins the song. Do they think that these remixes sound better next to The Stones and Led Zeppelin? They seem to do nothing more than sand off the abrasive edges.

Second question: Are WDHA and WRAT Active Rockers or Heritage Rockers? I think they fall into the latter category, regardless of how they report themselves. They play a limited amount of currents, and the majority of currents they do play seem to be rooted in traditional Classic Rock (Hinder, Buckcherry, Shinedown) or actual Classic Rock acts (Tom Petty). I mean, there's nothing wrong with playing these acts, but there's a lot of stuff that's missing from the playlists, whether we are talking about heavier bands (Atreyu, Bullet For My Valentine) or the more mainstream ones (Black Stone Cherry, Crossfade). That's why these stations are becoming more difficult to listen to - while I like most of what they play, it's just too much of the same old thing, and I think many people who "rock at work" are probably experiencing some Burn as well. Expanding both the currents and the library would solve this problem, so why not go for it?
