WRAT Tower? Not In My Back Yard!

A proposed upgrade and relocation of the WRAT-FM tower to Behrman Park has drawn the attention of residents from Lake Como, and the Spring Lake Heights area, who have joined together to form a group called "Residents Against Tower" (R.A.T. - get it?).

There are plans for a meeting on Wednesday regarding this development.

Based on their recent PPM performance in Jacksonville, FL, maybe they should move there. ::)

There's a gap of open land right off of 71 (H street) that's across from the park, the proposes tower could go there.

Tell the residents to suck it. Tell them if they want better cell phone reception then they better stop holding up progress. Besides, if WRAT can drop power and get a higher antenna, then the chances of the residents getting cancer from RF would drop!

If these NIMBY dopes were around 100 years ago like they are now, we'd still be in the 1800's.

That is what all of those "No Tower" signs mean? I thought it was for a cell tower. I think a 500+ tower in a residential neighborhood is a bit much. Why can't they build it near the existing tower?

Since WRAT licensed to Point Pleasant, they have to throw city grade coverage over it, while protecting adjacent channels on 95.7 and 96.1. So they are constrained as to where they can place the antenna.

I wouldn't mind a tower in my backyard - especially if they would be nice enough to let me put a receiving yagi on it :).

There has to be someone in that neighborhood who likes WRAT and won't mind its tower going up in their backyard.

Maybe they are getting kicked off the tower?

I think they own and operate the tower and studios on the same property, they wouldn't just kick themselves off of it.
It's all property of Greater Media. What's stopping them from adding height on their current tower?!

It's not gonna make a big signal difference in any direction, maybe an extra mile of coverage?!
The lower power compensates for the added height, so coverage is just about the same.

I say it's not worth the many thousands or more dollars to erect a new tower when theres really not much to gain. :p
I say leave it alone (and save your money), or add height to the existing tower.

Greater Media does own the tower. The tower was constructed when Adamant Brown still owned WADB. I don't understand the need for a new tower. I remember Adamant telling me how difficult it was to shoehorn WADB between 95.6 and 96.1 and protect those adjacent signals. The signal to the COL is fine. In fact, it's a pretty good signal period. The only reason I can see for building a new tower is revenue enhancement. The current tower is also in a residential area, as I recall.

When that tower was built in '83, to replace the origional tower less than a block away, there was still a 3kw@300' limit for Class A stations.

When the FCC started measuring height with the metric system it allowed for 28 more feet to be added to maintain the 3kw without dropping power due to increasing height.

When 107.1 went to 450' in 1985, all bets were off. WADB stayed on the new tower on the corner, even when WJLK raised their tower in 1987 and WOBM in 1989, and 106.3, later.

Short spaced, yeah, but NIMBY's are worse!
Short spaced it rational, NIMBY's are hypocritical and nuts!

Height rules! Especially if they can bring it inland at all.

The Lake Como Borough Council Did not make any Decision Concerning The Radio Tower at Their July 5th Meeting But did listen to More comments. Decision not likely till Aug. according to Asbury Park Press Article.

I am surprised that they didn't just say NO. That is what they did in ASbury Park about a year ago for a non-comm that wanted a tower on their roof.
