WRBP/Youngstown flips to Urban as 101.9 JAMZ

...from their previous longtime satellite Urban AC format and 102 JAMZ moniker.

They're playing all the big Urban hits, along with some of the more Pop/Urban crossovers ("Give It To Me" by Timbaland for example); they're borderline CHR/Rhythmic. Seems they're going after Clear Channel's rhythmic-leaning CHR WAKZ and to some extent both Urbans WENZ/Cleveland and WAMO/Pittsburgh which both have served as the "default" Urban stations in Youngstown for some time.

(Incidentally, CC used to lease 101.9 in the late 90's when it was then known as WBTJ/101-9 THE BEAT, which when the lease ended, CC moved the format to 95.9, evolving into what WAKZ is today, 95-9 KISS FM; Stop-26 then returned the frequency to what it had been prior, Urban AC as "102 JAMZ")

They're now calling themselves "101.9 JAMZ"; no sign of jocks yet. Wonder if they'll keep Tom Joyner on the station? Anyone have any info?

They aren't all that powerful from what I remember. That has to play havic with them getting ratings.

I have no info, Avenger, but I can use some from you since nobody is answering the phones at the station this afternoon.

Any news on the changes at sister station 1330 AM, particularly the debut of Ed Schultz?

I have some members of Ohio Majority Radio who would be very interested because the owners also have stations in Columbus, where we are trying to bring back Ed and Stephanie Miller locally.

It's not a bad signal in the city of Youngstown. Their tx is right over the PA border east of town.

Up north in Niles/Warren though, they are pretty weak up that way.

I not happy about the change at all considering that 107.9 plays nothing but the same songs constantly all day long and 102 Jamz was the only station that played all the r&b hits and oldies. Smh now the older crowd doesnt have a station to listen to. Not everyone wants to hear hip-hop constanly all the time. I'm 25 and I love rap music but even I dont want to hear it on every single radio station constantly all the time. Guess I'll be making some mixed cds

Sept. 17th 2007 update

101.9 JAMZ UPDATE - after you read this you will know

sidenote - on belmont avenue, i said OH SH...! when I saw the sign for the old 101.9 THE BEAT WBTJ hovirng over the street for all to see. wow talk about a flashback!

Bernard Radio of Ohio, LLC owns the station after Stop 26 Riverbend defaulted on a 12 million dollar loan. The bank that loaned them the money created an LLC and became the station owner. Similar situation as an investment firm operating radio stations are main line broadcasting and cherry creek radio.

Tom Joyner still there. Middays - music and commercials - PM Drive (first live pm drive since the Clear Channel lease of the frequence) DJ Herc U Rock also the station's program director. Night show host is local mc Lucky Penny. I am a new talent as well. See more of what I do at www.myspace.com/jjsolomon I have worked at WAMO, WJJJ and the old WBZZ in Pittsburgh and I have worked on the air at WOCQ in Ocean City, WJKS in WIlmington, Delaware and last summer and fall at WMBX and WJBW (now WNEW) in West Palm Beach, FL.

The radio stations website is being built my Youngstown Marketing and Promotions Company Maynstream, currently see the myspace site at www.myspace.com/1019jamz and the Maynstream Designed logo. The request line is 330 -743-9727, 330-744-5115 main ofc number and studios are located on the groud floor of 20 Federal Plaza West, suite t-2, youngstown, oh 44503
