WREK-HD2: Georgia Tech Student Radio adds Second Channel

If you guys haven't noticed, we've added a second channel. It's a mixture of our good and/or weird music (it's always at least one of the two...), with some public affairs and the like to be added later. It's not got a themed schedule like our main channel- it's more intended as just a "something else" for one to listen to when the main channel is playing something they'd rather not hear.

If you don't have an HD Radio, you can also listen via streaming on our website.

It sounds pretty good for being produced entirely by a single computer. Automation, audio processing, web stream encoding, and HD encoding are all occurring on the Importer itself. It costs us $1k in licensing per year, plus hardware costs. We had no CPB grant to help us pay for the upgrade, either- the students paid for it.

In regards to your messages about the merits of HD Radio-

HD Radio's quite useful for FMs. It really does provide a benefit with multicast channels and increased stereo reception under multipath. The interference to other stations is quite minimal except in the case of short-spaced stations, at least in every case I've heard.

HD Radio is a disaster on AM, though. Severe interference to adjacents, noise in the analog, terrible HD reception, and no multichannel benefit. Confine HD to FM and I'd be happy. I want my AM DX back.

I'm sure there are other stories about HD causing problems, and I would like to hear them in another thread, not this one. Feel free to drop a link/reference to the thread here, but don't argue back-and-forth about HD's merits here. Just drop your link and continue the discussion there.

Congrats Tom on getting the HD2 up! I havn't had a chance to listen yet but I'll check it out.
Way Cool that you got AV to run on the importer.....you Tech guys are hulluva engineers!!
