WREN-AM 590

What is the real story of what happened to one of the most needed radio stations in West Alabama 590 WREN-AM Carrolton, AL? The station formely was WRAG.

I don't know for sure but any license that wound up in the Bishop Willis group was not destined for any good. Many licenses were forfeited due to character issues with the licensee; indeed a sad epitaph to what was a great group of stations that were founded by the late Roth Hook. He was a good broadcaster, business man and person....

Wrong.

Clear Channel owns WREN's former FM sister station. The FM tower is still located at the AM site. Due to some sort of complex past RF interference issue, CC negotiated with the owner of WREN to cancel the license. It didn't help that WREN's most recent owner lacked the ability or willingness to operate the station.

Why did the CC make that deal to help cancel that license of WREN-AM? It seems someone does not want the truth to come out about the station owner from Missouri did not want to make a clear cut reasonbable deal to sell the station at a reasonable price. The station is very historic for that area is missed by many. The owner cited health reasons and the station being to far away to operate it. The station's frequency was the only valuable thing up for sale. Is there any way to get it back from the FCC in 2012 and back on the air?

I told you the truth. CC paid him, and he allowed the license to expire. One thing about CC, they don't like to "fix" anything...just take a look at some of their owned transmitter sites, including this one... they can't be bothered. From what I was told, the AM, when it was on, had some serious "leakage" into the FM's audio.

There is no easy mechanism available at the FCC to get the WREN facilities back.

That's a very rural area. Is there enough business in Carrollton to support a radio station?

Maybe if it weren't such a depressed part of the state, Pickens County could support it. There's a possibility it could be moved to Tuscaloosa to support an FM translator. Or maybe moved to the Golden Triangle, although that area is losing AMs left and right.

I believe Carrolton can support a local AM station like WREN which has done for the last 50 years, but I think if WREN-AM were placed back on the air and moved to Tuscaloosa and still covered Pickens County it will be in better shape to stay alive. A transponder or translator wouldnt hurt neither. What is the process of getting WREN-AM back on the air since the license has been cancelled? Why did the previous owner not do an LMA? He claimed he spent a lot of money to get the station up to par and still not on the air?

Would have to start from scratch and 590 would be short spaced to 580 in Tupelo now under the current rules which any new applicant would have to abide by. Applicant would spend several 100k before first spot was sold.
