WREQ sold (Elmira area)

Not exactly Binghamton, but I read with interest that WREQ 96.9 licensed to Ridgebury, PA (Elmira area) was sold to GEOS, and will go back to commercial from non-commercial. If I remember right that station puts a nice signal over the city of Elmira and surrounding area. Should make a nice pairing with WMTT and WPHD.

I know Kevin Fitzgerald posts here on occasion. Any plans for 96.9 yet Kevin?

This station has NEVER really ever had success in Elmira. It has little Corning coverage and is poorly received in buildings in Elmira city. It has never been a viable Elmira-Corning property, ever. The only time this station ever showed up in the ratings is when I LMAed it in 1991 and 1992 and simulcasted WMTT (then WPHD) 94.7 on it. I personally installed the Jampro HV antenna at that time (Matt Edwards owned it) and noticed while hanging from the tower that Comfort Hill perfectly blocked the signal of this station into Elmira City (ouch...talk about bad site locations batman!). This station will be part of our Northeast PA group of stations and will not be connected with the NY group.

Thanks for being candid Kevin. I've only heard it in the car once or twice so I didn't know the building penetration was so bad in Elmira. I wondered why someone didn't pounce on it before. It does make a lot of sense with your PA stations. Good luck with it.

I wonder if CSN wants out of NY entirely. If that's the case, I'd expect 90.1 in Binghamton to be put on the block before long, if it's not for sale already.

Also, what of the translator in Geneva on 90.7? From what I understand, WREQ is its primary. I assume the new primary will be WIFF (or whatever calls 90.1 is using these days)?

Personally, I wouldn't mind if that pesky translator just went dark altogether, but I know that's just a crazy dream. :(

That translator is in the NCE band so technically it can be a satellite-fed repeater of KAWZ in Twin Falls. And according to the CDBS, CSN already did transfer it back to Calvary Chapel's main entity in Twin Falls.

Also, don't forget that "CSN" and "Calvary Chapel" are essentially one and the same, are they not? Much like "Citicasters" and "Clear Channel", just to name one other. Calvary Chapel of the Finger Lakes has a titanic presence in the Finger Lakes alone with all ten repeaters of WZXV, plus another repeater they've got a CP for nearer Buffalo. Again, I don't know enough about the internal politics to know if CCotFL is basically the same as CCoTF, or if they're mortal enemies...but I would tend to assume that anything on an FCC filing with "Calvary" in the owner's name is probably all the same crowd.

FWIW, I can attest that WZXV comes in pretty well here in Geneva, so W214BR does seem a little redundant. Especially since W214BR is such a low ERP (10 watts). But I wouldn't automatically label it as "completely redundant".
