What is it with this station, are they Alternative or soft pop, they are sounding more like a soccer mom station (no offense to the SM's), where is the cutting edge Past and Present Alternative tunes. When they first launched, almost 7 years ago, they had a much edgier sound. Plus, they played some older Punk and Grunge. Sex Pistols, Screaming Trees, Flys, 7 Mary Three, Papa Roach and many other newer hard stuff was played. Now it sounds like dentist office music, we need a Hard Classic Alternative (ala the new 107X Denver) coming on board, 1045 is too soft and getting softer every day. Most of their music can be heard on their sisters 106.1 and 102.1, in fact they have a liner telling you if you want Perry go to the Q. Does CC really care about this cash cow. But I guess its better than most big Urban engulfed cities like NY, Balt and DC where there is nothing.

First- WRFF is definitely NOT a cash cow. It's run on the cheap, so it's in the black (if it wasn't, it wouldn't be around for 7 years now).

Second- The "Wimpy" sound is THE sound of Alternative right now. Looking at the Top 20 on the Alt Chart... 11 of the bands currently in the Top 20 have had crossover success at Hot AC and Pop with current or past songs. That's not Alternative becoming "wimpy," that's Alternative becoming more widely popular again.

104.5 does what it does very well. It plays well tested new music that fits the station's mold... and it plays the well tested gold tracks that usually did well with former Philly Alt (or Alt-ish) stations past.

107X in Denver will be destined to fail. Partly because of it's signal... partly because of the strength of KTCL, but partly because "Classic Alternative" will burn quickly. Any station that has tried it eventually flipped formats or tried to morph it into a regular Alternative station.

When 104.5 went on the air 7 years ago, they had a broad playlist, grabbing the attention of disenfranchised Alternative listeners in Philly. Since then, via research and feedback, they have shaped the station into the sound it is today, which falls very much in line with what Commercial Alternative is today. (Minus some of the still hard-rocking "Alt" stations in the midwest.)
 
If it's a cash cow, then, yeah, they care about it. They made it a cash cow, didn't they?
 
I was scanning up and down the frequencies the other day in the car. MMR actually seems to be playing harder rock than RFF. I'm not really in the demo for either, but was surprised to hear the harder stuff on MMR. I hadn't tuned-in for a long time.

Seriously, the deterioration of 104.5 is astounding (for listeners wanting a good station, if you're in CC Philly corporate, then it's just WONDERFUL). CC has basically turned 102.1, 104.5, and 106.1 into the same station with slight variations so you could easily jump from one to the other. 104.5 marked a new era of "Alt Pop" in radio. Yeah, they have all the standard Nirvana and Pearl Jam in the system. But the majority of the time is devoted to Of Monsters and Men, Lorde, Neon Trees, Grouplove, and all of the other absolute WEAKEST "alternative" coming out these days (which is all also in the systems at 102.1 and 106.1). It's a shame that we only have one actual rock station in town but I do feel that MMR is picking up the slack somewhat and it just makes them sound all the more interesting that they actually DO play "all kinds of rock" (mostly because no other station in town wants to).

This is what happens when 2 or 3 companies are allowed to own 6 stations each in a market. It is very very very clearly no longer about content, solely about $$$$$$$
 
Y100 Sounded really good the last 2 years they where on the Air they where Starting to Shift away from Alternative into an Active rock station
if only That greater media radio one Swap could have Happend Y100 would still be around today
