WRFN-LP moves to 107.1

Noted this Pasquo LPFM on 107.1 this afternoon, on the car radio in West Nashville.

I'm also hearing them intermittently up here in Pleasant View, as the wind gusts cartwheel my antenna around... once it calms down I'll swing the thing south & see what happens.

107.1 is working a LOT better than 98.9 -- WUHU isn't nearly as much of a problem as WANT -- but it's still pretty bad. Hopefully they're prepared to move again to 103.9 once Congress finishes up with repealing the prohibition on 3rd-adjacents.

Is RFN in queue for this somehow? I know a couple of other broadcasters who are waiting to pounce on 103.9, and each thinks it's theirs if they want it...

Apparently, there's no prohibition against second adjacents, as they are now at 107.1. Wouldn't 106.7 or 107.5 raise a fuss and a holler?

By the way, they've been on 107.1 for a while now. They were my escape from the all-Christmas all the time at Mix 92.9! ::)

RFN was granted an STA to relocate to 107.1 on 9/14/2009, with no formal objections from WNFN or WRVW.

Signed on the air @ 107.1 in late October and installed a 2 bay antenna system, which improved things *slightly*, but running up against a 50kw station in Kentucky still doesn't help matters much.

Just for you firepoint525, I'll cue up some Rupert for you ;D

The legislation that prohibited 3rd-adjacents didn't address 2nd-adjacents. At the time, the FCC had banned 2nd-adjacents on their own motion and I suppose the NAB figured the Commission would never change their mind.

But since the 2nd-adjacent restrictions were only in the FCC regulations -- not in law -- the FCC could change their mind. And they have. I think 2nd-adjacent translators have proven that it was a correct decision.

Since the 3rd-adjacent restrictions are enshrined in law (until Congress gets around to changing *its* mind) the FCC can't drop them on their own.

In the White Bridge Road neighborhood 107.1 is working a lot better than 98.9. It's still not good (and of course it's way outside your protected contour) but it's a big improvement.

I don't think any LPFM can be "in queue" for 103.9 right now. (though through STAs a variety of unanticipated things can happen) It's not a legitimate LPFM frequency here until Congress finishes acting.

I do see two FM translator applications for the frequency that could be a problem. Both are for the Brentwood area where the 90.7 KAWZ translator is, and both for 10 watts with an antenna about 250' above ground. One from Way FM, the other from Radio Assist Ministry. (which usually sells their translators)

I would think it would be pointless for Way to proceed, as their main transmitter is now in essentially the same place! (these applications were filed in 2003)

WNSR 560 does seem to think they have some kind of claim on 103.9. But they can't use either of these translators, as only translators that already existed as of this past summer can relay AMs.

Didn't think so. Just asking because your original message in this chain included the statement, "Hopefully they're prepared to move again to 103.9 once Congress finishes up with repealing the prohibition on 3rd-adjacents." Didn't know if I had missed something or not about 103.9

So, what they've got going with WNTC, north of Bowling Green was just step one in a more diabolical scheme...?

It doesn't make a dent outside of Nashville probably. I bought a Grundig G6 receiver a month or so ago, put a Philips VHF/UHF/FM Antenna in the external jack and I've only gotten WUHU on 107.1 so far. I have made a few LP catches though. (93.5 which repeats WTNK-1090 and 100.5 which repeats WGNS-1450)

I've even pulled in full power FM's from as far north as Louisville and Lexington to as far south as Tupelo, MS, Atlanta, Birmingham, and Huntsville

not bad for a rookie FM DXer I guess...

Well, it is an LPFM, so there's not a whole heckuva lot we can do with the signal, short of getting a couple of FM translators of our own or a simulcast on an HD sub channel somewhere.

Poor wording on my part. I meant I hoped they were ready to file for the frequency change once the law and FCC regulations changed to allow them to do so.

Wish I knew what they had in mind with WNTC! The thing seems to operate for a week or two every few months...

On two occasions I've heard WNSR on 103.9 with a signal that is not consistent with WNTC. (indeed, in the first case before the WNTC permit had been issued) In the first case, the signal was consistent with a low-power transmitter at the AM site, and in the second case it was consistent with a low-power transmitter at the studio, between Vandy and Music Row. Admittedly both cases were several years ago.

Interesting that you should mention that. If Mix 92.9 (as we know it now) had existed 30 years ago, they would not have been playing "Escape" right as it was hitting #1! Because it hit #1 in December 1979, and of course, Mix would have been too busy playing Christmas music, and they would have been missing out on what has become their signature song, right at the very height of its popularity!

I was listening to 107.1 in that area earlier this month, when they very suddenly just dropped off without any warning somewhere between O'Charley's and Nashville State. Not sure what was up with that! ???

Speaking of RFN, albeit a different one (one that you can actually pick up)

Looks like Rupert Free Nashville officially ended tonight at about 6:30 pm! All is well in the Mix radio world.

Next thing you know, WRQQ, home for the most monikers used by one station at the same on the planet, will name "Escape" as their #1 most requested rock song of 2009 and flip back to Star 97... You all did call and vote vote vote, right??? ;D

They must like those WRQQ call letters, because they have kept those in spite of all those other aforementioned changes! ;D :D
