Here's the link..

The two liner gives it away..
"Currently operating at 1 kw, this station has a CP that can go to 35kw. Some revenue, little cash flow. Real estate is available for upgrade"

Id love to see the STA allowing them to operate at 1KW...... that 35KW CP is useless.. go look at the coverage map.

Why is it opeartig with 1KW form a longwire somewhere? THe owner let the lease on the 4 tower site expire.

It's WFVR,Florida Vacation Radio.I remember when the late Jim Jennings owned that station. It was WGAF.At one point he was doing an automated beautiful music format.

They changed the call letters to WRFV if I recall, for Radio Free Valdosta.

The CP is for Wellborn, FL, near the junction of I-10 and I-75, which was intended for its travel format (simulcasted with 1680 in Orlando). With that gone, probably the most expedient option would be to cancel the Wellborn permit and diplex with another station in Valdosta. The question is whether Valdosta can even support the station 4 other AM stations and a bunch of FM stations.

Not only is the 4-tower land lease expired, the towers were taken down years ago. I believe it was Chuck Harder that got the CP to move the station down to Wellborn. It was a pretty dumb move.

No, it wasn't Chuck Harder who applied for and got the permit, it's the current owners who applied for it.. to run their TIRN, Travelers Information Radio Network on it.

Look closely at the coverage map for the 35KW CP....... it stays out of Georgia pretty well and stays out of the Gulf.. it basiclaly goes right down the highway as you head into Jacksonville...

Ironically, as expensive as it would be to build this facility, it would be perfect for what they wanted it for, Travelers Information Radio Network.

Or maybe the call letters WRFV will stand for Real. Florida. Vacation.

I believe it was WFVR for Florida Vacation Radio. Up into the late 1970s, 5KW day and night WGAF (Georgia-Florida) was a top 40/AC station with a great sound and signal to boot with regular listeners a good 50 miles out from Valdosta. Those 4 tall towers were a landmark right there on I-75. The station went down the tubes when it became part of some investment deal put together in the early 1980s calleed Faver Broadcasting as I recall.

This is true. The signal is now gone. The last time I heard it was getting out about 5 to 6 miles, and had all the fidelity of an unequalized, unbalanced telephone line minus a limiter/automatic gain control.

Fast forward to 2012...

What is the asking price for this quagmire / project radio station? Is Rama still paying on the $255,000 promissory note?

This station was on the Tune In Radio App on my andorid and I saw it but the stream is down. It was under for a sports AM station before it was off the air for good.

Re: WFVR 910 Valdosta FOR SALE..

Fixed the header....

So, 910 Valdosta is off again? If so, would WGOV benefit by moving there? IOW, did/does 910 have better coverage?

I'd think 950 suffers more at night, especially with the tick-tick of Radio Reloj in the background.

I don't live there, so......

Back when WGOV had the four tower night array and 1kW. It had a decent night signal. (Except when the open wire feeders would fall down....) If they had some modulation on the old RCA tx they had, the night pattern would have sounded better.

GAF at the time, had a much better signal at night---keep on mind they ran 5 at night , vs 1 for WGOV.

WGOV gave up the night pattern several years ago, and now operate into the tall WAAC tower.

That was probably for the best. The old WGOV towers were aluminum, and badly corroded. They would shake on many mornings when the sun hit them first thing---raining paint flakes and other material down on the building and parking lot. Since WGOV runs low power at night, I doubt they could do much with the night signal---and they probably would not want to drop the change on such a project.

At the old WGAF site, the <then> CE kept honey bees. I wonder if "Fletch" is still around---a hell of a guy.

Not to change the subject, but there was a thread on here a year or two ago about all of the AM signals that "went away"in south Georgia. It is interesting that most of those that went away, were "good" signals.
WACL 570, WGAF, WWGS, WMGA come to mind. Yet, some of those Class IV's are still around today, even with horrible day---and even worse night signals. All of that land for the towers---money talks, everybody walks I guess.

WRFV is definitely off...I have a translator in the same building. Was curious about that station myself. Last time it was on the audio was very distorted. It's still connected to a homemade dipole antenna...but actually had a decent signal when it was on.

All of them were very expensive to maintain and operate. Class IVs...not so. Low maintenance, low cost with 1KW ERP.....yet full time coverage. They used to say someone had to be a real dumb operator to lose money running a Class IV AM.

If AM-910 comes back on the air will thier singal will reach north florida and Tallahassee? Per Jeff Laurence post the link and the FCC saids WRFV 910 will run at 5,000 watts daytime and 5,000 watts nightime. I used to listren to AM 910 around Tallahassee when they were runing that vaction radio back in the 90's.
