WRFY/WKAP Sold

i read in the reading eagle a few weeks ago about Y-102 and WKAP 1340 AM being sold by clear channel to an outfit by the name of GoodRadio.TV Anyone have any information about this company? i never heard of them. any format changes coming?

PAX? Ya think there's a move afoot to replace the former WBYO 107.5 Christian Broadcasts with a big FM? 'RFY's a b i g signal...I used to pick it up in Atlantic County/Jersey Shore area before WJSE 102.7 went on-air.

I lost it, but gained WEEU.

Nooooo, growing up in Ephrata I listened to Y-102....please don't turn it into a WBYO type station! BTW, is WBYO not broadcasting Christian radio in Boyertown anymore? (Sorry, I live in Pittsburgh now so have no idea).

Well, yes and no. As I recall, the station you likely knew as WBYO would have been at 107.5. They were sold and became a "Mix" station for a brief time. While 107.5 was "Mix", the calls WBYO went to a station at 88.9 in Sellersville, Pa., not all that far from Boyertown. 88.9 anchors a series of stations that provide coverage from up in Hawley, down to Sellersville and out to Chambersburg. They're known as The WORD FM and play Christian rock.

Meanwhile, back at Mix they tanked quickly, sold to WDAC, went back to Christian music and teaching as WBYN, 107-Five Alive. They were very popular with there listeners for several years, but were sold a year or so ago to Nassau. 107.5 is now classic hits FRANK FM, WFKB.

Wow, things certainly have changed, although I didn't know much except WBYO was 107.5 in Boyertown. Last November we had to go to a wedding in Douglassville and heard FRANK-FM, but didn't even think about it being on 107.5, although we were in the Reading area on Rt. 222 and wasn't crazy about the music. Out here in Pittsburgh we have a WORD-FM. I wonder if its tied in with those in your area. Also, there used to be a contemporary Christian station in Lancaster called WJTL. Is that still around?

So, what are the odds that Y-102 will change formats, and if so, to what? Please don't let it turn into a country station!

Look I am sure they didn't sell the station for a song. No new owner will come in and blow it up.
No one buys a Hummer to put it right into a car crusher. Y102 bills too much money and has been and continues to be #1 by a huge margin in the Reading Market. The economics just aren't there to make any radical changes.

Franks Fall ratings went down from the spring book. Their ratings were better without jocks on the air. I think even the short lived Rumba even had higher ratings in the reading market then Frank.

WEEU and IOV had strong books in the fall as well much better than Francis. For a station that was supposed to blow the market away they really haven't moved the needle too much. Like it or not Y102 is still a 800lb gorilla in the market with or without clear channel owning them.

Bubba,
Perhaps you should look at the May Philly PPM's as well - Frank has a 128,000 cume (120,000 25-54) which is Montgomery/Bucks, the station sits right on the Montgomery/Berks line and although RFY may continue to be number 1 in Berks Frank will undoubtably have a much larger total audience...

Remember Berks has very few diaries (condensed market which means you have to average two books) so anything can happen in Berks with a very few P1 diaries, I wouldn't be took certain about that huge lead in a small market rating anything can happen!

rick,

That's great, but then why does Frank continue to target Reading (and call itself #1 in Reading, when it's pretty apparent that it's not) when you say it can gain an overall larger audience elsewhere, such as the suburbs of Philly?

I think they foolishly associate themselves with Reading because they have no clue. It was a decision made out of state, in a vacuum, without speaking to locals.

It would have much better imaging as a Delaware Valley/Lehigh Valley/Berks-Mont player. They wanted to move away from any association to Boyertown, and "appear" as a larger market station. It was a move in the wrong direction.

No offense to anyone in the city of Reading, but your town's government needs a change to clean up the City's image.

It comes down to postioning and the market you are going after.

If you are a Reading station then doesn't using the Philly book seems kind of smoke and mirrors?
Last I checked the Fall Arbitrons WRFY had Regional numbers showed 160,700 listeners up from 158,900 spring book. (Philadelphia TSA, Fall Arbitron 2006)

And while the Reading (condensed) market has its limitations, it is where Frank claims to live. Frank's claims to be #1 for classic rock is a valid claim but I guess WEEU can claim number one for talk, IOV can claim to be #1 for Country, WIOV-AM #1 for Sports radio I Guess WRFY can claim to be number one period. How far can claiming a #1 format niche take you?

Frank could be a huge berks/mont/chester/lehigh valley station but its own positioning puts it as a Reading station. I know you don't want to flank your own backyard in allentown and positioning it as Philly would be a real expensive uphill battle against stiff competition.

I guess we will see in about a month where things shake out when the Spring book hits but I wouldn't hold my breath that the results will be that dramatic to think Good Radio would do anything to WRFY. There is no cause to sound the alarms for them yet.

Good luck

Yes, the station is still here, it isnt going anywhere.
