Wright State Basketball to WBZI

Just heard the announcement on myclassiccountry.com. If the games are mostly in the evenings that puts them on the FM translator and internet stream as they are a class D with no post sunset operation.

I'm not familar with how that station's signal comes into the Cincinnati area although having it streamed on-line is an extra. When the Raiders' basketball games were on WONE, the day-time contests could be heard here easily.

I think 1090 WKFI out of Wilmington may carry some into the Cincinnati area, but probably not as strongly as WONE. There wasn't any streaming (except by student station WWSU for some home games) until WONE finally begin streaming online near the end of last season.

I wonder if this was about money, or if it was that WSU wanted to get on FM since a lot of sports properties seem to be moving that direction. UD has FM coverage via the "AM1290andnow95.7FMNewsTalkRadioWHIO" simulcast, but there's not a lot of other FM options to place sports on at the moment. The Bengals have WTUE, but football games are easier to place because they are once a week and generally on the same day of the week.

WKFI is able to be heard in many parts of the Cincinnati area during the day but you are correct, not as well as WONE. Is WKFI going to pick up the Raiders' basketball game feeds from WBZI? FM is nice, particularly for being able to be received at night.

It looks like overall they are getting a smaller coverage area than before. The Radio-Locator prediction shows it mostly covering Greene County in a circular pattern while their site shows it being more directional towards the northwest. WONE covered a larger area, although it looks like around the Wright State campus itself the coverage is weaker. It's disappointing, but I wonder if there is something else in the works for WONE.
As far as WWSU goes, they cover home Women's and Men's basketball regularly, as long as they can get people together to broadcast. The main problem they have is that Wright State doesn't let them broadcast from the sidelines, instead they are setup behind a basketball hoop. The range isn't that good but at least it covers the community around it along with online streaming.

WBKI FM can be picked up clearly in Troy. It also is clear in Greene County. The signal does have problems penetrating downtown Dayton. WONE's night pattern did not allow the signal to be heard around the Nutter Center and parts east and south of Dayton. WWSU can only be heard clearly just outside the University property.

I think the signal map on the WBZI website is based more on actual reception. Even though they are nondirectional, there's an issue similar to the 101.1 translator for Ultimate Oldies -- co-channel interference to the south from a full power station on 100.3 in Cincinnati which probably causes problems south of downtown Dayton as the signals seem to boom up the river valley. There are probably also issues with blanketing interference near the Clear Channel master FM site downtown. It does well north of downtown into Huber Heights and points north, and is also helped by running in mono.

Judging by the follow up articles in the paper, I think money was an issue and WSU was looking to cut costs, since they pay for the airtime up front and sell the ads. I would imagine the radio deal has been a money loser for quite some time.

WWSU was upgraded slightly and got a new antenna and tower, but is now "maxed out" as a Class D and gets routinely stomped on by the 106.9 in Marion, Indiana any time the tropo is up. Wright State did apply for a full power NCE in the last window but the available site would have been south of town around Springboro. It wound up in a huge MX group and will probably lose out on points.
