Writers Strike 2023?

Why don’t they do their shows without writers, the way Johnny Carson did in the late 80s:
It will also be a lot more difficult to get guests with SAG also on strike. I’ve read there are some episodes of The View that have no guests, they do ‘hot topics’ for an entire hour.

Drew Barrymore wanted to do her show without writers, and the union objected.
Of course the union was going to object. Her show employs writers who are on strike.

The reason Carson and Letterman were able to return in the 80s was because Carson (who was also executive producer of Letterman's show) reached an independent deal with the Writers' Guild, separate from the Networks. The Guild has thus far declined to do piecemeal deals this year.

maybe, let some shows reach a seperate indie deal with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA so they can continue writing

or they can be like the new season of Phineas and Ferb (they employ unionless writers that are not with the WGA)

Bill Maher has now changed his mind and will not return to his talk show, after facing pressure from striking writers:

Bill Maher has changed his mind and isn’t bringing back his HBO talk show amid the ongoing writer’s strike.

“My decision to return to work was made when it seemed nothing was happening and there was no end in sight to this strike,” Maher wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Now that both sides have agreed to go back to the negotiating table I’m going to delay the return of Real Time, for now, and hope they can finally get this done,” he added. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and studios are set to resume negotiations this week in a step that hopefully ends the several months-long strike.

This follows similar decisions by Drew Barrymore and others, who had planned on returning to the air without their writers.

There are plenty of TikTok "stars" and YouTube "stars" they could have on the air. Now, I quote "stars" because I think most of them aren't...but what can you do?

That could be true but I’ve read some social media “stars” are reluctant because it could hurt their chances of becoming real “stars” later in tv and film as the union remembers

if we don't stop the strike before reality and game shows go on strike, then all the other guilds of writing and actors around the world go on strike, there's going to be a big gaping screw and all awards will be hosted at home like COVID and this screw will stick until we can't unscrew it

as Team Rocket Said in XY001 "All You'll end up with is reruns"

They're right and in summary, We are all going to be screwed

Time to wean yourself off television, I guess. There's a whole big wide world out there away from the screen. Discover it.

Seriously, this isn't the end of the world.

Nothing is strike-proof, but the, um, reality is reality is a lot more strike-resistant. Game shows that don't depend on WGA writers, likewise. Jeopardy may muddle its way through, much as it did years ago in a similar situation, with recycled and banked clues. Sooner or later the well will run dry and it's going to be more challenging. But that's Jeopardy--many other games can go ahead with minimal to no significant impact.

It's funny, because the strikes really haven't impacted TV all that much YET, but I still find myself watching less and less TV content these days. The lack of new content might very well be the catalyst that gets me to cut the addiction all together!

Reruns are more entertaining than anything produced today. We aren't going to be screwed. Those in the TV industry will be, though. They'll find out how expendable they are.

i mean the ai is forming a big gaping screw around us, and if these fake excuses of civilization takeover all the shows, we will struggle until there's no unscrewing yep, we're going to be screwed in the future

Writers & Studios are back at the table hope this time there serious and that they stay at the table until the deal gets done that is the only way to get a deal done in my opinion. At some point the TV station groups will demand that Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson return to do the talk shows or they will be replaced by Byron Allen cheap filler or local news.
