Writers Strike 2023?

That Variety article is hilarious. They caved because they were losing on all fronts- business aka $$$, the public, and the solidarity and willingness by the unions to go the distance.

The AMPTP and their cronies can try to spin this all they want but the fact remains that they had hoped to break the resolve of the writers in order to ride roughshod over them and they failed.

Meanwhile with the actor’s strike:

Vulture has had some great reporting on this story, more than I had expected from them.

I don't know what anyone gets out of The Daily, beyond the fascinating soap opera that is Michael Barbaro's personal life.

The part about how DGA and SAG were expected to fold (and boy did DGA fold) reminds me of how many did expect the worst of Fran Drescher. At least she's proven them wrong.

The other side is that the studios will simply pass on the new costs to consumers through increased streaming fees. Expect to pay more for streaming at your next renewal.

So increase the royalties based on viewership. Cool, great win.

Unless, that is, the content just disappears. No platform, no views, no royalties. Watch for lots of older library content to fade away in the not so distant future. The writers may have certainly won some victories on paper, and great for them. But he who owns the content is able to take it away.

The media, at least, continues to scream about the increasing cost of inflation. I suspect one of the first things to go, if a family's budget is stretched too tight, are streaming costs. Although I don't have a problem with streaming fees I have not paid them in over 20 years. Programming simply not worth it to me.

The late night talk shows all returned with new episodes Monday night. They each managed to get guests on short notice. Kimmel had Arnold Schwarzenegger. Fallon had Matthew McConoughey. They did extended monologues. We'll find out later how many people came back when the nightly ratings come out.

The backlog of singers and bands who've been wanting to get their new music on one of those late night shows must be huge. Jason Isbell is on Kimmel tonight. I wouldn't be surprised to see a bunch of pop-country and alt-country acts appearing regularly on that and other shows for the next couple of months.

I think I heard Fallon say he has Jelly Roll on this week.

And I just heard Kimmel say he'd have "Lainey," but didn't say "Wilson," so it might be the pop band LANY, not the country star.
