WRJH for sale - auction

Don't know if anyone posted this already. WRJH is up for sale in an auction setting.

The auction agent is:
Thomas D. Renda, Esq. or Kerry Hopkins, Esq.
Miles & Stockbridge, P.C.
10 Light Street
Baltimore, Maryland 21202
(410) 727-6464

The current offer for WRJH is $1,500,000 with bidding ongoing from now until April 26th at 4:00 PM. A $100,000 deposit is required to participate. Each bidding increment is $50,000. The current topping bid would be $1,600,000.

So.... who's gonna get it? My bet is on Inner City Broadcasting!

Its about time. They've pretty much been defunct lately anyway, lots of dead air. It sounds like the station is running itself most of the time. Lots of KJ's superstore commercials too. I'd like to see WTWZ buy it and put bluegrass on it. That would be a rude awakening for all the gangsta rap fans. And funny to boot. By the way, how much did they give June Harris for the station when she sold it several years ago?

Given that their sister station in New Orleans is for sale and On Top is in bankruptcy court, it was bound to happen. The writing was on the wall (though maybe not as legible) when On Top lost the lease to WJXN and a Virginia radio station last year.

I believe Hot 97 is on borrowed time and if Inner City gets this station, you can pretty much say they're gone. What they or any other company does with it is up in the air at this time. Once we know who gets it, that may give us an indication of what direction it goes.<P ID="signature">______________

Yes, I too am curious to know what Ms. Harris got for that station. Usually the gospel station owners get a pretty penny for their stations for some reason. One person I know in South MS got over 1 million for his small FM station several years back and would not have sold had it not been for that amount of money; And I can't blame him!

Speaking of Ms. Harris, I was coming through Jackson yesterday, and I tuned to WRKN 970. In Florence, you could barely hear the music. Sounded like country but was really more static than anything else. Wonder what the story is on that station?

P.S. FWIW, the Jackson radio market stinks in my opinion compared to other parts of the country I live in and travel through!

June Harris sold the station in 1999 for $1,600,000 to Extreme Communications (later On Top Communications). She was paid $400,000 on closing and was promised $1,200,000 on a balloon-style note, which she received approximately 3 years later (and she earned interest on the $1.2M from 1999 until 2002).

It's a simulcast of WQST-AM Forest.

Mrs Harris also sold WRKN, its now WZQK Real country. I'm a regular listener because I like old country, but lately they've had some serious problems with the audio. Its distorted and during the day the audio is turned down really low, you have to turn the volume up to hear it. The signal is about the same but you can barely hear the music. Around sunset they cut the power and the audio suddenly gets louder, even though they go down to flea power. The talk show "The Right Side" in the afternoon also has some gremlins. sometimes the show can be heard but the commercials are either very low are not audible at all, one day it was the complete opposite. Low audio but loud commercials. I wish the powers that be would hurry up and fix the station, "Real Country" plays some pretty good tunes but it is nearly unlistenable the way it is now. By the way, how many other stations beside WQST/WZQK carry "The Right Side", I believe it originates from Hattisburg.

No wonder she sold it. I bet she'd had lots of offers over the years. From what I understand, most of the WRKN/WRJH equipment was antique anyway, unless it had been recently upgraded. But I assumed she must kept most everything except. the FM transmitter since the AM and the studio stayed put.

Seems like there was some litigation involving WRKN with Ken Rainey. Anyone know any gossip about why?

It is April 26 and as I write this, we're 16 hours away from the closing bell. Any updates on the bidding process?

No word as of yet. Quite a few folks are wondering what will happen to 97.7RFB
