WRJI's license canceled.

From today's Fybush: the station that was sharing time on 91.5 with WCVY has had its license canceled due to being off the air for over a year. They tried a last-minute attempt to move 91.5 to Providence (which would have upset 91.3). The F.C.C. killed that due to E.G. losing its only local service.

91.5 WRJI is broadcasting religious music in Spanish from a building in the center of Olneyville Square in Providence. They have a sign in the window on the second floor which says something like "the only Hispanic religious station in RI, Verizon took away our money." It's located above the Sam's convenience store. In a Google search, I found an address for the station, 39 Julian St. in Providence, not the building I saw, but a Spanish Evangelical church. While using Google Maps Street View, going around the building, I saw an antenna on the roof of the church and a red truck parked in front of the church, with the station's frequency, call letters and phone number.

The only Hispanic religious station in R.I.? Somebody should tell WIGV-LP! At least WIGV-LP has better audio.

If the WRJI people feel that they really have something to say...perhaps they could work out some sort of time-sharing arrangement with 96.5?

If not, I suppose the station(s) of the "Arpin Empire" would stand ready to take any money they might have scraped up.

And the beat goes on...

WRJI was off the air yesterday afternoon. I'm curious what happened with WRJI and Verizon, that made the station want to display on the window that Verizon took their money. 96.5 WIGV-LP is from another Spanish speaking church on Elmwood Ave. in Providence, and at 100 watts it has a decent signal in the same area as WRJI. Maybe WRJI intends to compete with WIGV-LP.

There is no WRJI. (Legally now DWRJI). WRJI's license was cancelled. They're done, finished, kaput. They have no legal authority to broadcast, what-so-ever. What you're hearing now is a pirate being run by the guys who formerly ran WRJI, on the old WRJI frequency. They're transmitting from the yellow building on Julian Street, causing extreme prohibited overlap to licensed WDOM and other stations.

If you want to get really nitpicky about it (and I know between the two of us, there's plenty of nitpickiness), they're not even legally "DWRJI." That's just a shorthand the FCC uses to retain the record in CDBS. Legally, it's just..."the now-deleted license that used to be known as WRJI," I suppose.

Taking a chapter out of Prince's book "The station formerly known as WRJI". We're now taking submissions on the weird symbols to represent this name change. :)

Drove by the WRJI studio again, or former studio, above the Sam's Convenience store, and now I know the lettering on the windows says "WRJI, the first Hispanic religious station in RI, Verizon took away our money." What I am wondering is how Verizon took their money, as they say, and is this the reason why it became a pirate station.
