WRJJ in Newark, DE

For anyone keeping count, AM1260 in Newark is now WRJJ instead of WAMS. At least this is only the 3rd set of call letters used on that frequency since sign-on in August, 1964 as compared to hundreads of different formats!

The call ties in well with the WRJE (Rejoice 1600) in Dover. Ths same programs are on both stations.

I guess he's settled on Urban Gospel as 1260's format. It would be interesting to see the ratings books to see how WRJJ 1260 rates vs 1510 WFAI as both serve the same market with the same format.

1260 has been with the same format for 3 books now and has never shown up. In fact, when the News Journal put out their annual Delaware Guide, they weren't even included in the list of radio stations!

Same with WFAI. Never been in a book and they have been doing the format for several years.

WPPZ is showing in the Wilmington book. With the music now on FM, 1260 and 1510 don't stand a chance. WDAS-AM is still surviving because of their long history as a heritage R&B station that has now been airing Gospel for many years.

To be fair...

WFAI has shown up in past books.

Re: 1260 Newark vs 1510 Salem/Wilmington vs 1600 Dover

My guess is, what keeps 1260, 1510, and 1600 Dover on the air is the brokered preachers rather than spots, so ratings may not be all that important to the owners of these stations.

Re: 1260 Newark vs 1510 Salem/Wilmington vs 1600 Dover

First, Keith, thanks for correcting me. The memory is failing much faster than the rest of me! And the rest of me is failing rapidly!

I drove from Ridley Park, PA to the middle of Dover Wednesday. Their idea of having the same programmng on both stations works well. I can hear 1260 from Ridley to well past Middletown (I was on Route 1, don't know how it is in all sections of lower NCC). 1260 is still very clear when you reach the 1600 signal. They basically cover the entire state. Any reasonable marketing campaign to their potential audience could allow this to break even, at least.

This music is not my thing. But I have listened to, and enjoyed, the music on WDAS-AM and "Highway 11" in Norristown. But regardless of the playlist, WPPZ will kill them in Wilmington. However, they have the rest of the state as their's alone. One would think they could pick up some state-wide ads. The potential is there. But again, they need to market the stations.

My guess is, what keeps 1260, 1510, and 1600 Dover on the

WRJJ/WRJE and WILM/WDOV

What your saying Jim that WRJJ-Wilmington and WRJE-Dover are doing what many had speculated WILM/WDOV would do as CC stations. That is similcast the morning drive time newsblock that WILM airs and possibly John Watson's Talk Show using an 800 # so that it could be a statewide talker. As you said all WRJJ/WRJE are indeed covering the state with their programming and all they need to do is sell it. If there is enough of a market for Gospel statewide, they just might be sucessful both in getting spots and listeners. Maybe it's time for the owner to start a billboard campaign on some of the major roads (Del Rt1, US13, US40, I-95/495).

Of course that does bring up that question as to why CC hasn't made this move with WILM/WDOV. It would seem like a smart thing to do. Comments anyone?

WCAO(?) Heaven 600 Baltimore has started doing that. There currently is a Heaven 600 billboard on US 40 in Elkton, MD, facing eastbound traffic about a mile before you get to the Delaware border. Perhaps WCAO is "vulturing" (is that a word) since 1550 am has flipped IIRC to sports talk.
