Bill...

You and I having both worked for H. Jack, that doesn't seem too far-fetched, does it?

Funny story... when WRJM was an MOR/AC mess back in 85-86 on 105.7 in Troy (Bill this was after you left to work at WLWI-AM), I was afternoons/APD under Rick Patrick (now at WOOF-FM). Mizell, his wife and daughter spent a week in Destin, where they became enamoured with a station called "The Wave" down there (I believe it was a Transtar Format 41 station).

At any rate, these folks spent a week of prime Gulf Coast vacation time holed up in their condo or hotel room or whatever, listening to this station and writing down every song they played. The list was typed up in Ozark at the mansion and couriered to us at the studios in Troy, where we were told, "You will follow this list to the letter; you will not deviate. Deviation will be grounds for termination."

One problem: The vast WRJM music library was missing about 40% of the songs that were on the "Master List". So whenever we'd have to skip a song on the list because we didn't have it, Jack would call us up and bitch (loudly) and threaten us with termination.

This went on for about two weeks, and finally, one day, I got totally fed up. I grabbed an album from my personal collection (Elton John's eponymous US debut from 1970), and took it to work with me. What song would I play? "Your Song?" Nope, too obvious.

"BORDER SONG"... Holy Moses.. I have been redeemed!

10 minutes before the end of my shift, I cued up the record and let it rip. 30 seconds into the song, the hotline rings. King Jack, who apparently had nothing better to do, called me up and proceeded to rip me a new one for "deviating from the approved playlist".

I interruped him and said, "Jack... you know what? If you don't like it, why don't you just FIRE me!" and hung up on him. I did my last break of the shift out of the Elton John cut, fired off the commercial break, handed my key to the building to the night guy, and walked out.

Of course, I had seen the handwriting on the wall and given my two weeks' notice... two weeks before! So I left and headed for the Gulf Coast, and afternoons at 92.5 WPAP in Panama City.

The funny thing was, Jack Mizell had no idea that I had resigned. He was so immersed in trying to sound like a Format 41 station without subscribing to the service and having to actually BUY a satellite dish, that he had no clue who was left on his staff 35 miles away.

And I don't think he ever DID get Osbern Henley to fix the cart machine with the squeaky capstan that actually created RF such that, if you were playing a cart in that machine, you could hear the squeak ON THE AIR... even with the mic turned off!

I can still hear it now...

"Playing Looove songs for Central Alabama... this is The NEW 105.7, WRJM Troy/Montgomery. Southtrust Bank Time is 6 o'clock."
