WRKI Radio Tower Hit By Lightning June 14

http://www.**********.com/forum/r20651887-WRKI-Radio-Tower-Hit-By-Lightning-June-14

That is all

Wow, that's an amazing shot with the smoke and fire afterwards. I assume I-95 is on backup right now? Is their aux transmitter nearby? It's been a nasty few days around here for storms. Hopefully they're back up and running soon.

Driving down route 25 it is significantly weaker in parts of Monroe and Trumbull before the Bridgeport booster starts picking up.

How come more radio stations aren't hit by lightning like this? The Empire State Building gets hit by lightning every other thunderstorm, so how come those stations don't go off the air? Yes, lightning can strike twice.

A few weeks ago a poster on another board mentioned that the HD2 and HD3 channels of some of the NYC stations got knocked off the air by lightning. Does that count for anything?

Around these parts MEGA 910 seems to get zapped a lot. Their towers are on Birdseye Road (off of Route 6 in Farmington). And DRC-FM got knocked off the air for a number of hours during some nasty thunderstorms one summer a few years back.

when their main tower is off: reception in greenwich is great :) I wish their tower get hit more often and WRKI-1 rock and roll more often.. Okay maybe thats a bad thing for everybody but for me its nice to listen to WRKI on a walkmen a lot stronger than usual. I can't wait until WCTZ moves to nassau if they ever do as well.

No offense guys, but does EVERY post has to relate to WDRC or wishing that a station was knocked off the air? It's a little predictable. All we need is a report about the lightning's effects in New Britain.

Ok, rant over :)

We are back on with a shiny new antenna and some extra grounding protection. Thanks for the comments!

-Tim Sheehan/ I-95

PS Because every post needs a WDRC angle, I used to work with Mark Andrews and Dan Lovallo back in the WSNG days! Everyone happy now?

Hey Tim, since you're already here...Can you get Seth Reddick to just shut the hell up and give me the traffic update?...I need the traffic information. What I don't need, or like ,is his commentary, opinions and views on traffic and the drivers...In his own words ,he's "nothing to write home about"...Leave the jokes to Lou...Now he's funny!!!! Seth, not so much!!! And I hate his lead in to most reports.."Ethan, Lou.......Liiiiiiiiiiiiisa"= Annooooooooooooooooooooying!!!!!
Love the morning show otherwise..Lou is hilarious..most of the time..Ethan, he's a rock...A beautiful, hairless rock!! Lisa delivers the news in a professional, straight forward manner, without that sing, songy, butcher the names, elooooooooooooongating the words style of a certain "news" person on PLR...
Glad your antenna is back up (Viagra?), and I can once again hear Danbury's Rock Station...

J-

"Glad your antenna is back up (Viagra?)"

Well, of COURSE it was Viagra! Pfizer used to have a car in our Grand Prix, so there'll be none of that Cialis keepin' OUR antenna up!

Thanks for the props on the morning show. I'll pass 'em along to the boyz (and grrrl.) Sorry Seth is hitting a nerve. With the lack of traffic cams in our corner of the state, as long as the reports are accurate (which his are) I don't care if he's doing old Henny Youngman bits before he delivers the info!

Just curious... did I have a beer with you a couple of years ago at Maggie McFly's in Southbury?

TS

PS Thanks 220... I try to rock whenever possible!

Maybe lightning only attacks 95.1 stations with fire bombs. LOL. Actually, I've been victim to this on three occasions at 95.1 WAYV Atlantic City when it had a Jampro antenna with radomes over a 10 year period. An eyewitness saw the lightning hit the tower on one of those occasions and watched the "tower" burst into flames. It was actually the radome. The bay was OK.

Since WAYV went to a non-radomed ERI seven years ago, it hasn't happened since.

The Empire State Building does get hit frequently, but has no radomed FM antennas.

I will never again buy a radomed antenna for mounting near the top of a tower.

I seem to get WAVY during the DX season here in Old Greenwich CT. Can you guy down there get I-91 when WAVY goes down at all?

WAYV/Atlantic City, WZZO/Allentown PA & WRKI/Brookfield CT are all on 95.1mhz

In NJ, PA & CT, I've received all three stations at one time or another.
