WRKO: A crass act

While driving with my wife and two young children this morning at about 8 a.m., we hear the voice-over man on WRKO loudly announce something like this: "WRKO... we've got BALLS...down to here..."

What can be done to clean up OUR airwaves?

Your radio has a tuning control. Use it. Now that you think WRKO is the worst thing ever invented and a serious threat to our American way of life (geez...where on these boards have I heard THAT before???), don't listen anymore. Bitching about it on a message board ain't gonna change things.

Besides, we all know that language is the most serious problem we face in America today. Keeping all Americans from hearing THOSE WORDS will make us safe from every conceivable threat in the world.

Sorry, I OD'ed on my sarcasm meds today...

I heard it as well but what would you expect from a failing and desparate talker who if the rating plunge continues will lose those precise organs.

Clean up the airwaves? relax it is not a slur, a curse word said, etc. It's not your place to clean up the airwaves but to decide for yourself what you're comfortable listening to. In other words you tune them out. That liner is hardly offensive, sophomoric maybe but if you're offended by something that benign you're in for a lot of offense coming your way, the media is losing listeners, viewers, in droves so they have to capture the attention now more than eveer before. Havent you noticed the stretching of boundries on basic cable channels like FX? where cable stations were always allowed to curse but they chose not to because they wanted to take a high road and be seen as equal to the networks. Well when people are no longer watching the networks because of pay cable, and bad network programming which catered to middle Ammerica and feared offending the bible belt. it made for bland programs which bored people. The standards are lowered to grab the attention of the wayward viewer. In radio it's even worse, listeners are tuning out in record numbers so they're trying to jolt you into paying attention to them. It worked you're here talking about it but really it was not even that shocking. .

Yes, once they re-hire Casablanca all will be well again.
This sounds more like something WEEI would say though who knows. Actually there are failed talkers
further down the AM dial (one owned by Salem and two owned by Clear Channel) while 'RKO has
been moderately successful.

OK, I'll admit that I wasn't in the car so I can't say what did or didn't happen, but I would be willing to guess a couple things.

1. You say your children are young, if we're talking under 5, it's probably safe to say one of these is the case:
a. They were staring out the window and didn't even know the radio was on.
b. They heard voices coming from the radio, but only heard "blah blah blah blah blah blah"
c. They were thnking about what to build in the sandbox next time they play.

2. If kids are in the car, Radio Disney should be on.

Radio Disney! I would rather my kids listen to non-stop, lame balls jokes than non-stop commercials for ABC/Disney products.

I guess this is the effect that Jason Wolfe has had on RKO. Lame balls jokes. Can anyone tell me what Wolfe did at EEI that was so amazing, other than stay out of his air-staff's way? If he brings that same approach to RKO, they are in even bigger trouble than they are now.

Speaking of now: it's been about a year for Wolfe, hasn't it? He 'footprint' should have been made by now.

I hate that after the window passes you can't edit a post.

I shouldn't have said "Radio Disney shouldn't be on" because that sounds like I'm telling you what to do, which was not my intention. I just meant they'd probably rather hear Mickey and Minnie's voices.

And Lucy...Unfortunatley I think Wolfey has made his footprint...an ugly footprint. In my limited personal experiences, unfriendly and not helpful at all.

I sort of like radio disney for what they are I think they are pretty interesting. Your point is well taken though you're the parent so it's your responsibility to make sure that what you're listening to in the car is appropriate for the kids and a station that targets blue caller, angry, suburban white males between ages 25-54, is not it. So they said "Balls" , you think the actual show content will be any more family friendly this week with the Foley discussions that will inevitably go on? and Im sure they were talkig about the Foley sitation last week when you were listening and they stopped talking about middle aged men sending lewd, sexually charged correspondence to teenage boys, for a sweeper that said "balls". Put in context I guess you really should not have had rko on with your kids in the car. That does not make it RKO's fault. Radio stations dont raise your kids YOU DO, so be the parent and take some responsibility.

Let’s play “Blame the listeners”

If the program stinks, it’s their fault for not turning the dial.
If the content is rude and sophomoric and unsuitable for children, it’s their fault for letting their kids get near the radio.

We’re not talking about the Howard Stern show. That would not be on when the kids are in the car. We’re talking about the only source of morning political discussion. I don’t want potty talk mixed in, nor has it typically been up until now. How is it my fault that I object to potty talk mixed in with political discussion? Is it ever the station’s fault?

raccoonradio, thanks for acknowledging the truth ;)

er, I was being half-sarcastic :) ;) Hire him, Jason W...so we don't have to read anti-RKO posts anymore! ;D
And the part about the failed talkers further down the AM dial (no, certainly not WBZ!) is true, at least in terms of the 12+ ratings I'm allowed to see. All syndie WTTT (conservative) does not show up at all in these,
and WKOXKS (liberal, syndie except for Sunday afternoon show) gets ratings one-half as much as a 250
watt (day; 3 watt night) standards station just off Fresh Pond Parkway...

For the record, that's how Danny Rea got his break into radio. He would call up Jerry Williams when Jerry was on WBZ Radio and complain there was no conservative voice on WBZ. The harassment worked - BZ hired him and the rest as they say is history.

Danny was always a conservative Republican. In fact, he succeeded me as President of our college young Republicans. Yes, this poster was president of a college young Repubs - That is before I matured and said a pox on all political parties - right -left and center. The faculty advisor tried to get Danny removed as President because of his conservative views and I had to testify before the Republican state committee to tell them his election was fair and legal and that he should remain as the college young Republican president.

All of this from 'the encylopedia of semi-useless information."

For the record, WJIB-AM operates with a power output of FIVE watts at night.

the best is yet to come.....april 2007. red sox baseball. that will only add to wolfie's legacy - talk radio station that plays sports every day. how many teams on wrko now? celts, sox, revs, bc eagles. i hear bullfighting on the radio is huge in spain and curling is a hit in canada.

WRKO should hire Casablanca. He has the experience. He probably would make the station sound ten times better. People usually get ridiculed when they have talent, otherwise they would be ignored.

I blushing ;)
