WRKO Cancels "Bernie" Tryout

hooray!

does it seem to you that this decision was made by the higher ups? higher than Jason and Julie??

What a shame, Bernie would have been great. In this case, WRKO is all 'bust' and no 'balls'.. What a shame, when money talks, especially advertisign revenues.. The station will pay attention.

Imus is a moron, Bernie is a moron, Opie and Anthony are morons, JV and Elvis are morons, BUT are they never allowed to work again? IF the parameters are defined and they act correctly what is the big deal. Are PC police going to follow them everywhere and keep them out of the medium?

It's hardly the P.C. police - I listen to radio to be entertained, advertisers want audience.

It used to be entertainment brought in audience. In my opinion, having to go as low as O & A, Bubba Sponge of Love, Eljay and Velvis & Imus, doesn't take talent. Anyone can do it. Imus could have had a nice career without stooping so low. He made his bed, let him sleep in it, with or without what Howie calls the "trophy wife".

Sadly, quick money is taking first place over entertainment.

Read this:

George Regan, a spokesman for Entercom Communications, the parent company of WRKO, declined to say why the invitation was rescinded. But over the weekend, a 1997 interview on CBS' ``60 Minutes'' surfaced in which Imus was quoted using a racial slur to say that McGuirk was hired for his show to tell jokes about blacks.

"After careful deliberation, [WRKO] decided that it would not be appropriate for Bernie to be a co-host at WRKO at this time," Regan said.

=========

what shocks me is Dan Kennedy, usually a reliable journalist, says that Finneran is "... a guy who -- although he's not doing that well on the ratings -- certainly has some class and some dignity"

Class and Dignity? About as much dignity as Howie Carr, Rush Limbaugh, Mike Savage - birds of a feather flock together. Maybe it is Dan Kennedy who needs to make a retraction.

Var-

Point taken. I really gotta believe people can be reformed from stupid stuff like this. If he can help that station I would think the advertisers would want that. Maybe it was too soon.

more on this from Boston Radio Watch and also savewrko.com which quotes the Herald's article by
Jessica Heslam

http://www.bostonradiowatch.com

http://www.savewrko.com

"WRKO's decision comes a day before Sadiki Kambon-led The Black Community Information Center Inc. planned to protest outside the radio station's studios in Brighton for considering McGuirk as a possible co-host on Finneran's floundering morning show. This is not the first time, Kambon and BCIC have been protesting Entercom Boston's management decisions. Three and a half years [ago], Kambon called for the outright firing of WEEI's top-rated morning team "Dennis and Callahan" after they compared an escaped gorilla from Franklin Park Zoo to a METCO student."

Hey Raccoon, did you notice the Save WRKO site reiterates my sentiments on Finneran/Dan Kennedy?

thanks for posting that stuff.

haven't quite seen all the sites yet...right now I'm doing a piece on the McGuirk situation for
Boston Radio Blog and will mention that some slight progress in bringing back prog talk (via
Save Prog Talk group) may be happening...

http://bostonradio.blogspot.com (not up yet, give it a couple minutes)

Joe, was that your quote ("So now, they make another stupid decision, to bring in Bernie McGuirk for a few days and thoroughly piss off the African-American community.")? Hmm!

The Globe piece and also Heslam's blog in the Herald says that a 1997 60 Minutes piece has been found in
which Imus used a racial slur as he said that McG was hired to "tell jokes about blacks"

I just made a comment on SaveWRKO blog saying that while Red Sox should get good ratings and Howie
is still holding his own, the rest of the lineup is apparently in re-arranging-the-deck-chairs-on-the-Titanic
mode...

Jessica's blog with 60 Minutes transcript:
http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/messengerBlog/?p=308

----------------------
WALLACE: You told Tom Anderson, the producer, in your car, coming home, that Bernard McGuirk is there to do (n-word) jokes.

IMUS: Well, I`ve — I never use that word.
TOM ANDERSON, “60 MINUTES” PRODUCER: I recall you using that word.

IMUS: Oh, OK. Well, then I used that word. But I mean, of course that was an off-the-record conversation
-------------------------

Imus also says "if you're offended, don't listen"

This spells the beginning of the end for Julie "The Exectioner" Kahn and her "little me" Jason... Bye, Bye...

Interesting, so these people so hate this man that they will take time off from their jobs ::) to make certain that McGuirk cannot earn a living and must starve. What ever happened to the idea of changing the station? If the guy tanks, he'll be fired. Supply and demand - simple as that.

Meanwhile, these same people who appear to want all but death of McGuirk quietly sit on their hands when it comes to actually dealing with the tough (and real) issues of drugs and violence in their community. Something is truly wrong here. People have completely lost their perspective as to what's really important.

It's the first and only thing I'll say on this WRKO protest/McGuirk cancellation.

Change the station to what?

McG will starve unless he has this job? ROFL!!!! poor guy! LOLOL!!! (don't you worry about him. Once conservatives get all the people that are here illegally shipped home, he'll have plenty of employment choices. There will be a huge need for housekeepers and laundry aides in nursing homes. I am sure McG is perfectly suited for something like that.)

hey, this site is mentioned at least in the online version of the Herald article (maybe didn't make the print version; I haven't seen the print version yet). Updated a couple hours ago:

>>Tom Taylor, news editor at Radio-Info.com, said, “Ultimately, it always comes down to acceptance by advertisers and listeners.” Taylor said he believes McGuirk will eventually find a radio job, but right now, “The climate is too soon after the storm.”

Finn, you know Brnout was putting the tongue in cheek - notice the little smile.

But it does bring up a bigger issue - how many talented on-air people don't get a chance because a
Bernie McJerk does?

am I missing something? I thought it was ::), not :)

In any case, the thought of poor Mr. McJerk needing defending was just a very funny thought.

If Mc Jerk can't take what he dishes out then he should go sell aluminum siding and get out of the business. How would you like McJerk work on your house

This control is disturbing. Control of what we want to listen to.

How about O.J. certainly what Imus said is pale to what that jerk did, yet, the murderer still gets persons to want his autograph.
