The more appropriate comparison would be

"listeners to AM Stereo?"

But I guess that wouldn't do much to advance the narrative.

Not an appropriate comparison at all.

AM Stereo had competing formats in the marketplace.

If a listener wanted to buy an AM stereo receiver, he had to know which format his station was using...then go and by a radio for that format. And it wouldn't work with other stations using competing formats. Who would bother. Never mind that music was gone from AM.

Any listener can go buy an HD radio tomorrow, and begin enjoying the added features immediately.

Not only that...but HD is on FM....an AM Stereo was, of course, an AM only feature..that didn't make much difference on news/talk/sports radio. HD Radio allows people to hear multiple streams/channels.

There is no comparison at all.
