WRKO Morning is the *Worst*

Someone please explain that accent to me? Where is he originally from? Mars?

I've never heard anyone in my life sound like he does.

How about a tag team show with him and Mike Francesa from WFAN? It could be a speech therapist's nightmare.

Someone please explain that accent to me? Where is he originally from? Mars?

I've never heard anyone in my life sound like he does.

I think it's a combination of "Canadian" (where he was born) and "Croatian" his parents birthplace.

A strange combination for sure.

He was born & raised in Montreal, and his parents came from Croatia. That must have been a pretty tight ethnic enclave for him to keep the accent all these years. It's kind of annoying, but easier to listen to than that guy overnight on sports hub, or the late Lynne Samuels out of NYC.

I didn't know WRKO was still on the air.
Kuhner sounds like one of Jackie Mason's bastard sons.

..........Google kars4kids and oorah and you'll find lots of info.......

This has been pretty well known ever since the ads started running. The people donating the cars are doing so to help themselves get favorable treatment from the IRS, so most of them wouldn't care if the car was going to help a head-hunting cargo cult near Tonga.

........ "Oorah" is not just something that Marines yell. They're an organization that runs children's sleepover camps in the Catskills run by orthodox Jews trying to instill more orthodox Jewish beliefs in children of less-observant Jews, and Kars4Kids provides funding for the camps........

Maybe you can help me out here. Jewish sponsored camps in the Catskills are not exactly an endangered species. Assuming OOrah doesn't kidnap the kids off the sidewalk in Brooklyn, you're saying that less- or non-observant Jews send their kids to an Orthodox Jewish camp so they won't be exposed to Orthodox Judaism? Sort of like those athiests who send their kids to Catholic-sponsored camps so they won't be exposed to Christianity. Do I have that right?

......Maybe "indoctrination" was a bit hyperbolic.......

Ya think?

>>Unsold inventory in the 4th quarter in morning drive is unheard of.
....... Indeed, agreed......

And you would be wrong. Being 'sold-out' is often evidence of either poor inventory control or bad sales management. Never being sold out is why God invented rate cards. When 'BZwas doing twelve-shares in AMD, we always had (very expensive) avails. Now, I understand that you normally assume that just about anything somebody else posts is right because they know more about the biz than you do (which is always the way to bet) but not in this case.

.... As for comments about Howie being gone in a year, possibly but possibly not; do they continue talk and he, with just about nowhere to go (Boston Herald Radio? Hey, he already works for the paper) may just stick it out for whatever they can offer him. He's dreamed about moving to Florida (yeah do your show as a webstream only, but wouldn't you want to be closer to Boston to cover/comment on stories?).......

Blah, blah, blah. The obligatory Howie Carr babble. This is becoming the RadioDiscussion version of white noise.

>> I may be left leaning but I listen to and enjoy many conservative hosts.>>>

........Yes some do listen even if they really disagree!).......

Not many. Phil Boyce was often asked why he didn't suggest programming a mix of liberal, conservative, middle of the road, talk programs. He always replied 'because it doesn't work." Ergo, anyone who gives you the line that they listen to all points of view is possibly BSing you. Anyone who says that and makes a cottage industry out of strickly bashing conservative hosts is definitely BSing you. It's their way of saying..."I listen to all points of view. Period."

I know you want to be everyone's buddy, but when they're playing you for a sap you may want to make some exceptions. By tarnation, when someone accused you of being a hypocrit for doing a public radio show, I had to make your case for you AFTER you AGREED with THEM! You may want to take a couple of weeks off from posting and learn something about this stuff. That way, when somebody is p**ing on you leg, you won't have to nod when they tell you it's raining. 13,500 content-free posts are not doing you any favors.

Wasn't Boyce at WABC when they did exactly that? I seem to recall there were liberal and conservative hosts at WABC for a significant portion of their history as a talk station.

.... As for comments about Howie being gone in a year, possibly but possibly not;

Here's my prediction re: Howie Carr.

1.) A few stations (Some even on FM) will entertain the idea of flipping format to talk with Howie as their anchor. Will do research to see if there is room for a 2nd talk station. There is a very slim chance this will happen...but expect Howie's agents and lawyers to present their case to other stations....if for nothing else, to have the threat of something in their quiver s they negotiate with Entercom.

2.) Howie attempts to do something like Michael Graham....creating his own network and pocketing the money instead of it going to Entercom (it's already put together for him! WHYN, WGAN, WVMT, WCRN ...maybe Manchester, Providence, Concord, NH, etc.) He could shop his show around to other Boston stations. ...and expect a simulcast on Boston Herald radio.

2.) Howie stays at Entercom for some agreed upon figure (probably a pay cut), and Howie continues his "Boy, do I hate management" and his ongoing columnist persona of "I hate the people in power...at the state house...the management of this station, anyone else that he can point his wrath at. Howie forces some "concessions" in return for his cut in pay...and some demands (which will be played out as Howie "winning" and "boy I really came out on top!").

...such as:

-He owns the network and syndication rights to his show. (right now the affiliated stations pay Entercom) Howie has always been good and attentive to his affiliates, calling in on their morning show, etc.

-He is able to do his show from home (something Entercom forbid, however, many host do this, such as Jay Severin, etc.) ...or from Florida.

-He is given the concession of being simulcast on 97.7 in the Boston area...because he has always said he needs to be on FM.

-Entercom agrees to a bigger promotional budget and effort for the Howie Carr show.

-Howie has more say in his fill-in/replacement, his staff, producers, board ops, and more say (or final say), in his program.

-A link on the WRKO web page...linking to Howie's personal web page...where he c an hawk his books, speaking engagements andmagnets. ;-)

Anyone else got suggestions for "concessions" Howie should extract in exchange for his pay cut?

;-)

Boyce started at WABC in, IIRC, the mid-1990s. Most, if not all, of the libs were either gone or going by that time, and Boyce rebuilt the station around Limbaugh, Hannity, Curt Sliwa (sp?...the Guardian Angels guy) and Mark Levin. I'm not sure who did the overnights (Art Bell, probably). From Mornng Drive to past midnight, under Boyce the station became wall-to-wall conservative.

The libs you might be thinking of (Alan Colmes, perchance?) were there in the 80s, but were gone by the time Boyce arrived.

Howie on 97.7? It would be very unlikely as they need it to bring WAAF into town. As Howie would put it, "the chances are
slim and none and slim just left town". Can't totally rule it out, but I would think putting Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz on
680 would have a better chance. Or: thinking that a fairness doctrine is on the way, WBUR hires Howie....ha.

Yes WRKO is still on the air and has yet to put snake oil informercials in AM or PM drive, though some could argue Kuhner
comes close.

Howie Carr babble--if you can't get it from him, get it from me! White noise helps some people go to sleep; I'm available to
adapt my posts into audio form.
Content free posts? I have broken stories here, offered links for verification, made predictions (a couple came true) and many love me, but you're welcome to set my posts to Ignore if you wish. T.S. did have some really nice posts in the past and I look forward
to more from him.

Maybe they're prizing the rock demo more than talk. If anything they could use 107.3 to help RKO out west, but that would take AAF away from Metro West and Worcester. Years ago I suggested the put the Sox and maybe even all of EEI on 93.7 (I'd like to hear the games at work...)...say did they ever try that? :)

.................Feel free to add you own opinions instead of just snarky comments. ;-)................

??????? I just agreed with everything you said in that 'graph. Nothing 'snarky' about that. Only thing I would have changed was "probably a pay cut" to "definitely a pay cut,", but that's too much of a quibble even for me.

......................Oh, and I know you're smart enough to learn how to quote properly. ;-) ...............

I'm usually pretty careful about quotes.

OK...my bad, maybe I reead too much into your post. ;-)

But you're using an ellipse instead of using the button below that says: "Reply with Quote"

Oh. Sorry, but it's a holdover from the days when I used to post others' words in blue when I only had issue with one sentence or two. Helped me keep things straight. I guess that one person's endearing eccentricity is another's annoying affectation.

Judging by your past posts...you seem to have a negative opinion of any conservative host.

Can you name a conservative host that you enjoy? Or one that you listen to regularly?

Certainly, as I have mentioned in other posts, I love the John Batchelor program as listen online when ever I can. Larry Kudlow has a very informative program. Avi Nelson presents his conservative viewpoint without name calling, Dan Rea is liberal on some social issues, but I would consider him a Conservative. When I had Sirius in my last car, I would tune into Bill Bennett and enjoy his program from time to time.

Mr. Bench in your zeal to slam somebody at every turn you often miss the point. Are you familiar with a bump rate? Being sold out is evidence of supply and demand. Successful stations are often sold out in drive time and offer agencies that have to be on when there are no available spots a rate that is much higher than normally charged. I doubt RKO has sold many bump rate spots recently. An advertiser who bought at a lower rate is moved to a different time period as stipulation in the contract. Can you name one other major station in Boston that runs Ad Council PSA's in morning drive? If you have to run those spots in the 4th quarter I would say that your having a hard time selling your station despite how many times the host, in this case Crazy Kuhner, says his ratings are fantastic.
