Saturday night around 8 o'clock I was listening to WRKO on 820 AM in Knoxville, TN. As I'm originally from Boston I knew WRKO was on 680 AM and has a directional signal that would never reach the southern states, so this came as a very intriguing mystery. The first thing to cross my mind was that WRKO might be simulcasting on some other station, but the only station I know of on 820 AM is WBAP in Texas, which typically comes in strong here at night. But why would WBAP be simulcasting WRKO? I listened for a good fifteen minutes to what was apparently a delayed rebroadcast of the Scott Allen Miller show with Todd Fienberg filling in. Todd was taking calls from listeners discussing a tragic accident inside the Big Dig tunnel where a woman was killed. The station repeatedly identified itself as WRKO 680 in Boston (although not in legal ID form.) He was taking calls from such familiar sounding places as Wakefield and Saugus and making numerous references to Massachusetts' political figures and Big Dig contractors. Finally around 8:15 the mystery revealed itself. I was actually hearing a syndicated program "The Best Of Talk Radio," which was being carried on WBAP. But for fifteen minutes I had every reason to think I was listening to WRKO on 820 AM!
All this left me with questions about the Best Of Talk Radio program. Is this being carried in other markets and how many stations are being "rebroadcast" in this way?
