WRKO should ban itself - Howie Carr on JonBenet Ramsey

Isn't it time that WRKO banned itself? When a radio station can't beat an NPR signal, when it has to hire interns at minimum wage or maybe the chance to sleep in Howie's Boston condo if they will smear critics of that station - it is time for another FCC crackdown like when General Tire ran the station into the ground.

You can change the owners, but 680 AM is cursed.

They should play Yoko Ono's Silence day in and day out. BMI won't charge them for that. Oh, they are too cheap to get a BMI/ASCAP/SESAC license???

Here's the important information you'll get on the Howie Carr show today

if John Mark Karr married Howie Carr he would be John Mark Karr Carr ...say 3 times fast

if you don't like what he writes, don't read what he writes. That said, WRKO does have its listeners like me;
Howie is simply talking about what people want to hear at the moment (the water cooler topic), and there's
always NPR, Air America, or various other outlets (including talk shows on the Net) for people to turn to.
When WRKO starts getting 0.4s in the ratings, maybe it'll change.

Speaking of ratings the latest 12+ ones came out on radioandrecords on Aug 22...if I had access to the 25-54s
I'd talk about that but I don't. Aforementioned WRKO's ratings are over 7 times that of the Air America stations.
As usual, a station just before changing its format winds up going UP in the ratings the period before:
WILD-FM.

1030 and 850 on top; even with downfall of Red Sox, expect WEEI to do well what with Pats talk.
'JMN's ratings should go up next time, if they inherit only a part of WILD-FM's listeners.
'CRB consistently strong; we'll see how they do when they switch to 99.5 in a few months,.
Slightly down for WTKK.Slightly up, WJIB.
Slight uptick for WBCN.

And for those who say 25-54s count more, well, I'd surely discuss them if I had access...

seriously.. if you don't like Carr's schtick, don't listen. I don't listen to anything on WRKO or WTKK because I don't want to hear it. Much like I don't listen to Dennis and Callahan and have decided not to listen to WEEI this fall when Smerlas is on there, because he grates after about five minutes and, even though he knows his football, sometimes crosses over into political topics that I don't want to hear on a sports show.

there are plenty of other radio outlets...

If WRKO is cursed, then surely its parent company must be doing pretty badly. The company that just shelled
out $30 million for WILD-FM, and spent $262 million in one day. Then there was the amount they spent to retain Red Sox rights (and move them to WRKO). They were able to spend money made through advertising on highly-rated stations. Yes,
maybe the interns get minimum wage but I'll bet other stations do the same. (How much money I made in
1983/84 as a WFNX intern: $0.00)

Dead Sox indeed but as long as they keep filling Fenway and are beloved by the fans, there will be interest,
and listeners.

Old Globe cartoon (prob. by Szep) showed a man, wearing Red Sox cap and uniform, sitting on a park bench
with his girlfriend (read: fans). "Don't worry, I won't let you down... again..."

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? HOWIE CARR IS PURE TABLOID

Why do expect more from a "cut and paste" tabloid ink-stained wretch?
Howie is to reporters what martial music is to music or military intelligence is to... well, you get it.

Howie Carr is giving the public the junk news or talk they deserve.
Cf. H.L. Menchen.

800 large, baby! (salary, not weight) Best selling book! Popular talk radio show all around New England. Long running, award winning column.
Not everyone will appreciate him, but I do, and I've met him a couple nice times and he really is a very
nice guy.

'As a political reporter for WNEV (now WHDH), his coverage of then mayor Kevin White was so relentless that after the mayor announced he wasn't running again, he told the Boston Globe that one of the things he enjoyed most about his impending retirement was not having Carr chase him around the city"

Actually, the late Jerry Williams had more to do with Kevin Hagen White's exit from the political stage than Howie Carr. Carr was just another back bench Herald reporter in the early 80's. Reporters like Peter Gelsinus, also of the Herald, had much more clout at that time than did Carr.
Of course, Kevin White, who now suffers from Alzheimers disease, could hold a grudge forever. As the saying goes, ' the last thing an Irishman with Alzheimers forgets are the grudges...' Kevin White went from a 60's reformer to just another corrupt hack. The Parkman house was the place he stashed his gal pals ..." Spring" bursts eternal ;)" and his alleged personal and off shore accounts at the city's expense.
When Williams went after him Kevin White had his snipers out [ can you spell George [ what color is my hair this week] Regan was his press hack. Unfortunately, as the politicians says, the shots missed Jerry and hit his producer.
Well, Jerry's dead and Kevin Hagen White has one foot in...if he can remember... And "Spring" found au bon pain. And the producer lives.

Speaking of Jerry, the Wikipedia entry for Howie (there is none, yet, for Jerry) said that "Carr played himself
in 'A Civil Action'" but I corrected it to read that the talk host seen in the first two minutes, played by Howie,
is prob. based on Jerry Williams. When the WR Grace case was being discussed on WRKO, it was prob.
by Jerry--Howie had no show yet. Thus my "correction"...and maybe Jerry and Howie each had something to do with Kevin H. White not running again (Steve Sweeney as White: "And they said I took Curley's desk.
What about Moe's desk? Larry's desk? Are Laurel and Hahhhhhhhhhhhdy missing any furniture that I should know about. And someone goes up to me and says, 'Save the Whales'--I could see saving _stamps_...I am the
mayah of the schitty o' Borston!")

From A Civil Action cast list (IMDB.com):
Howie Carr .... Radio Talk Show Host
(note it does not say "himself" or, for that matter "Jerry Williams", but since the case took place in early
80s and HC wasn't a talk host yet...)

As to Steve Sweeney doing the Mayor, it was actually Jim Morris who started doing Kevin White on Larry Glick's show and then did the infamous "Hizzoner" a sound - a - like of Kevin Hagen White, on Jerry Williams Show on July 16, 1982.

Wikipidia is a plethora of inaccuracies. The errors amaze me, and what disturbs me is that people actually cite it as a source.

dang, I miss Jerry, even if he did help launch Howie's radio career.

I was just thinking last night--whatever DID happen to Grace, Queen of the Cockamamies?

and look what I just found (it may have been posted here before but just in case...)

Wikipedia is a work in progress. It is supposed to be public domain, but some people just cut and paste material that is not public domain.

Did not know that about Kevin White. Did anyone see in today's Herald how Tom Reilly just pulled a Ray Flynn for a photo op on the highway?
