WRKO SIGNS TEN YEAR CONTRACT WITH THE RED SOX

WRKO News Director and ace reporter, Rod Fritz, just announced on WRKO that Entercom has signed a ten year contract to broadcast the Red Sox beginning in 2007 as the Flagship station. This is a return of the Red Sox to WRKO which broadcast the Sox in the 1980's.Does this officially kill Boston Tonight and syndicated talk radio at night on WRKO?

I think if they really want to keep Taste around for awhile, it's safe until next spring when Sox start on 680.They could keep it up w/ Celtics (assuming Celts don't move totally to 850) and TOB, since Celts aren'ton virtually every weeknight--maybe 2 or 3 weeknights per week. But the Sox ARE on just about every weeknight (maybe 2 days off per month!)...I'm guessing they'll keep Savage where he is and, after the post game show, say, "Now, you can talk about tonight's game--over on AM 850". OR will they do a post game _Sox talk_ show on 680?DePetro was mentioning it this morning as he talked to SoxChief Oper. officer Mike Dee. The WRKO website now has the official announcementhttp://wrko.com/Article.asp?PT=Top%20Story&id=212257"We are pleased that we can move our radio broadcasts to a 50,000-watt station with an excellent signal pattern, one that was the radio home of the Red Sox for twelve years,” Lucchino said"(...excellent signal except to the west, but maybe WAAF canfix that. And if that DOES happen, expect a slogan of "The Station That Rocks Your Sox")"We look forward to building a stronger network of affiliated stations throughout New England" (Dee)"A limited series of special games will also be broadcast on WEEI (850 AM)."...???

Yes, that could be the case. Opening day, or a "getaway day" (1 pm start on a weekday when one or both teams has to get out of town), etc.

It apparently means Friday night baseball, tossing a bone to WEEI with a single game per week. WEEI loves talking about the Globe's relationship with the Sox. Now Entercom has anchored its talk franchise for a decade with the long-term deal, effectively branding both am's as Red Sox stations.

IMO, this is a mistake, those of us that listen to TALK radio, listen for the TALK, not the sports, if I want sports I'll listen to EEI, this is going to cause some of us to find a new station to listen to, why can't they leave well enough alone, they finally got rid of that Boston this morning nonsense now they do this, I don't understand, they are driving listeners away, it's bad enough we had the Celtics and now the Revolution interrupting talk radio programs, Sunday mornings with two hours of BORING, YAWING, financial shows, not sure which one is more boring and then the drug show later on in the afternoon, AND, they are still doing the boring rewind radio on Saturday mornings, not interactive radio at all. I don't like the direction this staion is taking, they are more interested in $$$ than in satisfying the customer. I have sent a couple of e-mails to the station and have gotten the standard, thanks for your opinion, they don't care that listeners are dropping like flies.

How dare they make money! The next thing you know, Dr's will be trying to make money. And then it will be the oil companies. We need a socialist government. Quick get Hillary in office! Keep those radio stations from trying to make money! Who do they think they are?

Well Entercom is putting out a lot of $$ to make money (though maybe $20 million a year is small pototates;it pays for the salary of exactly ONE Sox player, Manny!) How dare they make money indeed! ;D Remember the first episode of WKRP in Cincinnatti, whenAndy Travis changed the format from beautiful music for raucous rock? Station owner, Mrs. Carlson: Young man, this radio station is a BUSINESS. It is not here for your personallistening pleasure.New PD, Andy Travis: Ma'am, I know it's business, and that's why I had no choice but to change theformat.

Speaking of the Red Sox. Is there a bigger tool in Boston media than Tom Caron? Perhaps the most annoying person I have ever seen or heard in radio or tv. He also might be the biggest kiss a** ever. Your thoughts?

I think they'll stay on WEEI-FM. Still the same corporate parent, just a different flagship, except of course on the weekends, if the plans hold.I think the idea of putting day games on 850 on the weekends is crazy.

Have we all concluded that the "limited number of games on WEEI"includes weekday day games that cover any part of the 12-3pm ETtimeslot? WRKO ain't gonna pre-empt El Rushbo for baseball.
