WRKO suspends talk show host Carr

Howie has, by all accounts, become very disgruntled since Limbaugh was allowed to go to another station. He feels the parent company isn't committed to WRKO's success, and he hasn't been shy about saying so.

Well, there's nothing the parent company could do about it. The competition owns that show.

Maybe Howie should commit himself to making the best radio show he can. Maybe then Entercom could syndicate him.

maybe he should commit himself, too

he's not on air during his suspension week anywyas due to holiday, if you read the article. i guess theres no 17K for mimosas this year

Will Howie escalate the issue by not showing up at WRKO a week from Monday? Part of me wants to see how that would play out.

Howie was forced to stay at Entercom in 2007 (contract runs till late 2012). He was off air for 2 months during that squabble. Just before his 'last show' before he THOUGHT he'd be going to Greater Media, Howie had to read a statement on air which they had written for him...he kept saying 'it says here' to let his listeners know that he was reading something he had nothing to do with.

Before he had that short sabbatical, and definitely after, he went after RKO/ETM in any way he could. They seemed to grin and bear it but maybe this is making the station look bad to advertisers, etc.? I don't know if
he was personally attacking Jason, Julie, etc on air but they have just suspended their biggest name for a week
(and he made it sound today like he was "going to Fla. on vacation") and now even Brian Maloney brought his blog back to life (so you KNOW this is big news!) :) Unless some miracle happens (Howie would love to leave),
he's stuck there till late 2012 (or would he be able to be hired by Greater Media or Clear Channel? CBS?
He could do 3-6 pm on Rush Radio and then lead into delayed Hannity--but again this is prob over 2 yrs away, so...)

They said he denigrated the signal. Guess what: many times of the year, it stinks--at or before sunset,
people out west have to turn to WCRN...

btw Sox forced over to RKO due to Celts playoffs on Sat., Tue., and Fri. In case of latter 2 I think games start at 7, so pregame at 6:30. Whomever's filling in for Howie will be cut off by 6:25 or so

Entercom happens!

Entercom Happens!

He has no lead in, he has to work in the same building as Finneran, they have cut his staff, put him in a crap studio, etc etc etc, what does she expect him to be? Happy? OOps they fired Happy a while back.

As soon as they can get Manning up to speed he'll be in PM drive and they will pay Howie to stay home.

Back in 2007 it was Entercom that had Howie by the short hairs. Now the tables are turned. Lacking Limbaugh, WRKO certainly doesn't want to give away the rest of their day to the competition. I'm sure Howie knows that he's the remaining bread-winner in the Entercom family, and he's pushing management because he knows they need him. Their 'cultivation' of new hosts has failed miserably, and Howie knows this, too. Getting Manning 'up to speed' is a bit presumptuous, I would declare. He won't 'magically succeed' the same way that Finneran hasn't 'magically succeeded.'

Julie and Jason have become hated within the market for their heavy-handed tactics. I won't listen to WRKO because I refuse to help their ratings. There are many thousands of people who are doing the same.

Thanks for link!
DK says there may not be room for Howie at WTKK and certainly not at his prev. salary but what about 1200?
Again, the salary would be a lot less, but picture him in pm drive (Sean delayed till 6) or am drive (Katz moved elsewhere or let go though Katz is a good host too). Howie and Jeff in the morning?

I have read this quote about Limbaugh about 5 times in the last 24 hours. The parent company didn't "allow" Limbaugh to go to another station. It was taken away from them. They had (virtually) no say in the matter.

Ummmm....Manning? UP to speed? You are kidding, right? RKO doesn't know how to develop talent...and Manning is not PM drive talent. Just finding someone who has contacts does not make a successful talk show host.(i.e..look how well that plan worked with Finneran.)

And the station will not "pay Howie to stay home." I think he might be careful not to find himself at the receiving end of a civil suit.....AND the inability to work anywhere.

Here's news to you. Your listening (or not listening) doesn't do anything to "help their ratings".

Nothing yet in the Herald about Howie suspension? The other paper--don't tell me, Eye'll think of the name (--Norma Nathan) had the scoop. Howie, get hired by WTKK and sneer at El Globo on your way into 55 Morrissey!

Gee, maybe he should file a grievance with the union. Whoops. No, can't do that, Howie sided with management in decertifying AFTRA. So did Callahan and Denis.

How interesting, the suspension kings all thought it a good idea to make it easier to suspend talent.

Doesn't HLC usually take the school vacation weeks off as vacation time and head to Florida?

I suspect he wasn't planning to be at Guest Street anyway, and it's just costing him a weeks pay, which I am sure he can afford to do without. If anything he now has an extra week of vacation time on the books to take anytime he wants.

He can do more damage to the station by doing it their way than he can by sabotaging it.

Can't wait to see Sunday's Herald, I bet his piece has an Entercom Happens line in it somewhere.

New from Berg Sportswear, Corinna Maine, Entercom Happens T Shirts, Hats, hoodies, emblazoned with "Entercom Happens" in bold letters and a picture of Tea & Pearl dropping a duece.

I know it won't happen (at least while his contract is still in force) but I'd love to see Howie move to WTKK and be rid of Eagan and Braude.

Howie has stated on more than one occasion that his contract from 2007 has him taking all the school holidays off. Avi Nelson mentioned two weeks ago that he would be filling in a couple of days for Howie this week. Howie was taking this week off anyway so it's no big deal, only thing is he's not getting paid and I don't even see in the article where it says "suspended without pay" so who knows maybe he's just silenced for a week, but again, he was taking the week of anyway so it's nothing earth shattering. Howie's still laughing all the way to the bank.

Howie has also mentioned that Limbaugh was taken away from RKO and there was nothing RKO could do about it.

As for Manning coming up to speed, has anyone actually listened to his show? Up to speed??? Not in this lifetime. The man can't even speak, um umm ummmmm ummmmmmmm ummmmmmmmmmmmm. He wasted good airtime not too long ago with a Tiger presser. He wasted airtime with regular updates of teenagers on Revere beach, who cares. He uses his "sarcastic" voice and it's far from attractive, he doesn't pull it off very well. Up to speed? Bwahahahahahahahahahaha, my 14 month old grandchild will be up to speed long before Charlie! ;D ;D ;D

Must've absconded with one cupcake too many this time!

I have no personal love for the man. But, he's a damn good Talk host.

Got to link to this again...

http://www.dankennedy.net/2010/04/17/is-there-more-to-howies-suspension/

and point out some interesting comments on there (note the ones by Tony S. and Aaron R.) which talk about the money situation with WRKO/Entercom and the possibilities that exist. WRKO's signal problems,
the cost of spots to pay for Howie, RKO and EEI's competition on FM, and so on...

excerpt, from Tony's comment:
>>Anyone listening to Howie’s show knows that it’s not sold out....Back in the heyday, Howie was billing a pretty chunk of change...As advertising has dried up for everyone, they could be looking at other options.
