WRKQ back to Mike Beverly..

I read on the FCC daily update that WRKQ is going back to M.B.
I would have thought that with the only other Monroe county competition being the Horne stations in Sweetwater that this station could make a go of it as a local outlet.

Not at all, I did not mean to imply that it was due to financial reasons because I do not know that. By looking at the WRKQ web site they have added quite a bit of programming and advertising to it and thought it might be on the track to do quite well. The history of this station over the past 20 years has not been one of profitability due to the non radio experienced owners. The previous owners up until when Mike Beverly purchased it was a local preacher and then a real estate developer. Oldies was a good niche format for that area until the Sweetwater FM switched to the True Oldies channel and WLAR with it's translator in Athens went oldies not long ago, for a 500w AM stations that would not be good.

My in-laws lived in Madisonville up until this past December so we were in the area a number of times through the years. It once looked like we might live there temporarily so I visited the station when Mike Beverly owned it previously. I knew I would be bored out of my gourd in Madisonville if I didn't have something to do. My wife and I decided not to move there, though. If we had, I would have tried to find some way to have been involved with 1250.

Last July I heard WRKQ under Mike Powers and thought it sounded good for such a small market station. Oldies music mix was good, local news and weather..sports..really a full service format, for the most part. Sports director Brandon Keys sounded pretty good on the air as well.

It appears that it is going back to Mr. Beverly for forgiveness of the loan balance of $72,500.

Being aware of some of the history of WRKQ, it did appear to be a better station, first under Beverly Broadcasting, and then under Mike Powers. I suspect the small business base in Monroe County is the station's biggest handicap. The signal covered the area quite well..we heard it into Athens last time.

With my in-laws now in Ohio, I expect my visits to East Tennessee are done. I have enjoyed the oldies on WRKQ and wish the best for all parties concerned.
