Little guys with little signals that are marginal to begin with, or rimshots will be unlistenable in many cases, rendering their operations useless, therefore they will either go out of business or have to resort to servicing their new coverage area instead of playing in the bigger market they used to marginally serve. So, in essence, there will be less listenable AM stations in a market post-IBOC.
Has anyone considered just having the radio manufactures produce IBOC-FM and DRM-AM radios for the next few years, then when there's enough DRM-capable radios out there, let AMs choose to dump analog on a station-by-station basis for DRM? If people would be a bit patient, that would be an excellent solution that would WORK and provide the best in-band digital signal with GOOD audio properties. Music stations could adopt it first, and talk formats could stay analog for a long period of time. Think of this. If 10 years rolled on and there where many radios out there that could get the DRM signal, wouldn't it work great for music stations? Can the industry stop being so damn greedy for long enough to see that there is a better long-term solution that will be MUCH better if they would just be a little patient?
While all of the industries' politicians put their spins on stuff, we get a bastardized format that cannot and will not serve our needs. Isn't it time to stop them from giving us the mechanical spinning discs for color TV, or the Magnavox AM Stereo system of the 2005s? Left to the politicians, we'll get the compromised version which equals CRAP.
One day we'll wake up and realize how BADLY we screwed up by not going DRM here in the US. We always seem to pick the most bastardized format we can here in this country. Why? POLITICS!
