WRML 102.3

WRML 102.3 in Pageland, SC is most likely flipping to spanish. The station which is currently southern gospel is in the process of being sold to La Tremenda which own's WGSP-AM in Charlotte, NC.

I guess that's going to make the folks at WIXE (1190) and WDEX (1430) in Monroe happy. They'll be the only English-language stations in that neck of the woods doing any local programming.

HOLY COW!!!!! The planets and stars must be really lined up correct... I can see wayne and company selling RML... It will be a big loss for Union, Chesterfield, and Lancaster counties, but the spanish population is growing and I can see it doing pretty good for those counties... What will be interesting is to see if there is the same kind of backlash when top 40 was tried on what was then WMAP FM... All the churches were in an uproar and after a year and a half of chr then hot AC it was switched back to gospel... CC

If that was to happen (NORSAN), it will be a very “inexpensive” operation. They already have everything set up and will be just adding this one to the lineup.

It already is an "inexpensive" operation I wouldn’t expect that to change if Norsan buys it. WRML has always had the potential to cover Monroe decently but they have been stopped by being to close to an airport if Norsan can get that airport to go to GPS approach than he can get a height improvement on the tower. I think it’s safe to say he wants Monroe I cant imagine he cares to much about the cows in Pageland.

WMAP question.

Hi CC,

When did WMAP tried Top 40? Was it live or automated?

Thanks,

And GPS approaches are REALLY expensive. The problem is, even if they did install a GPS approach, they still couldn't increase the tower height. Even today, most planes flying into a small airport like Monroe aren't GPS-equipped. GPS approaches are great toys, but since it isn't mandated technology, you can't force a pilot to use it. So, you'd still have the tower height issue even with a GPS approach at the airport.

Can't they move their tower somewhere else not near the airport?

Re: WMAP question.

Hey Robyn :) When they were top 40 they were live and local the only odd part of the day was when they did tradio the swapshop kind of show. they switched from southern gospel in aug of 89 and broadcast from their AM studios in Monroe. When Hugo did a lot of damage to the am studio they broadcast from the Pageland studios which were being ran by a jock named Johnny Schack. he had nothing to do with the programming of map other than selling ad time for Pageland HS sports which was always taped delayed... By the time the summer of 90 rolled around they were hot AC and for what they had to work with they sounded pretty good... They even started a party show on Saturday nights which although I was never on the air I help put together a lot of dance music for them... AHHHHH the memories :) anyway by the time 91 rolled around there was a lot of churches that were very upset the the devils music was being played and on Jan 1st 1992 it went back to southern gospel being ran by Schack... Once he once again had control of MAP it went down the crapper till it was sold in the late 90s to roberts who moved studios right downtown Pageland complete with new console AV automation etc etc etc... I almost went to work for MAP until I wound up at PUB in Camden... Hope that answers a few questions... CC

The current owners tried to find another site that was not in the way of the airport but were unable to find an alternative Norsan may have better luck...

The website was working I guess they took it down since they are spanish as of today.

I would think that if this station filed for a site move and downgraded WBAV to a C0, they would have many more site options.

Re: WMAP question.

I was just getting out of college when they went to their "Rhythm Of The Carolinas" format and talked quite a bit with the guy who launched it. Basically, he wanted it to sound similar to the WCU radio station. He told me that the owners were basically getting scared. He left for a gig at WTDR, and then the FM was switched back to gospel, which ALSO caused a hue and cry. Younger people called up the station to complain. So they did a very unbrilliant thing, they offered the hot AC format on the AM only, half a day since it was a daytimer.

Obviously a watered down Top 40 format on an AM daytimer was not a viable proposal in the early 90's.

There is a cell tower half way between Pageland and Monroe perched on a fairly high hill. It's near the intersection of Hwy 601 and Carl Funderburke Road in Union County. I would think this would be a perfect site??
