WRMS 87.9 FM

Is this station a pirate? I see that the WRMS calls seem to be licensed to a station in Illinois and not 87.9 in Connecticut. Regardless, I love the music that they play. I've been listening since I saw their posters up around town here. I haven't recognized too many songs, but there's definitely a need for this kind of hard rock on the airwaves here.

If they're pushing more then about 10 milliwats and getting out more then 1/2 mile then they are most likely a pirate.

A few stations have operated in your neck of the woods on 87.9 in the past several years......... it's sad when a pirate stations serves the musical needs of the residents better then the real stations.

The dead giveaway would be the frequency: 87.9 MHz, FCC allocation FM channel #200, is not (normally) licensed for FM broadcast since it can cause havoc with the audio carrier for TV Channel 6. Obviously, a pirate operating that station.

KSDH 87.9 Mountain View, Ca is the only station licensed to operate on 87.9!

Actually, there's also a couple of licensed TV stations operating as if they are FM stations, one in Alaska.

Channel 6 TV audio is on 87.75. (+/-0.01) They're supposed to limit their peak deviation to 25KHz - what would be 33-1/3% modulation for a FM station. Having never been to Alaska I don't know if they do.

As for 87.9, there are actually two licensed stations on the frequency. Last year a new 88.3 station in the Reno, Nevada area displaced a Sun Valley translator from 88.1. The translator operator asked for permission to move to 87.9, and got it, earning the calls K200AA.

An experimental station in Brazos, Texas is also authorized but my information is that the experiment is long over and the station silent for years.

I knew I'd find it, if I tried to remember it, 87.7 in Alaska "The End" is an alternative rock station and the website is...

http://www.kznd.com/

I guess it's a good thing I don't live there, my car stereo only goes to 87.9.

KZND is also now on 94.7 from Houston/Big Lake, Alaska. It's owner passed away and the company who owns KZND-LP 6 bought/is leasing 94.7 and both stations now have the KZND calls.

I've heard of a couple stations using 87.7 as an FM station ;D

Im surprised the FCC would allow this seeing how they have gotton over the last 20 years!!

Hell,
I went to NYC on monday afternoon and their are people running around the city with t-shirts for the radio station on 87.7. I still can't figure out what it is because in asking what the station was they could not speak english which didn't help. oh well what can you do...
theres also an annoying pirate on 106.3 as well
