WRNE Translator

That new app puts it on a very short tower. Surely they can get that baby up on the old WSRE TV tower behind the Escambia County Jail.

The HAAT where the CP is now is higher than WRRX's on the old WSRE tower. The translator would almost certainly occupy a lower level of the tower unless they wanted to incur the expense of installing diplexing equipment to mesh 106.1 and tiny little 106.9. This is WRNE we're talking about, I'm sure they don't have that kind of engineering clout or money against Cumulus.

250 watts from that tower should perform well. After all, it's mostly downhill to Pensacola. ;)

I look forward to trying to receive it over here in Foley. I can get the Divine Word translator on 103.3 but it's very fuzzy.

Based on previous experience trying to get a solid signal from the old analog signal of WBQP-CA from that Industrial Blvd. tower I don't have high hopes. I know the transmitter for WRNE needs to be in that area due to demographics but since the COL for WRNE is Gulf Breeze the best location for any other format would have to be the WUWF tower. The Calvery translator gets very good Pensacola coverage with like 20 watts from that area... all water and great line of sight from WUWF tower to Pensacola with bonus coverage of fast growing Navarre and the possiblity of spill over onto the Fort Walton radio dial.

Would 106.9 be allowed to locate at the top of the old 107.3 tower with the full 250 watts?

I just looked up WRRX. 365 ft above ground level. I'm certain that tower is taller. Since WRRX's signal predates the shutdown of WSRE TVs analog signal I wonder if the top spot on the WRRX tower is currently in use? Anyone know how to look that up? Ther are two towers of similar height off Fairfield Dr. near the Esc Co jail, I assume the second tower is for public safety/government communications systems but I truly know nothing about that second Fairfield Dr tower.

Interesting document. We learn from it that in December ADX/Cat Country has FINALLY applied to move their 106.5 translator from BFE Milton to the ADX owned WNRP AM tower in downtown Pensacola. Local FM news/talk is finally on its way to Pensacola. Watch out WCOA-AM, after 106.5 signs on the only advantage you'll have left is Rush.

The translator invasion has begun!

Known new Pensacola stations:

101.1 Sports ESPN 1450 (anything local besides Pelicans baseball?)
103.3 WDWR 1230 Catholic *on air*
106.5 WNRP 1620 News Talk with local personalities
106.9 WRNE 980 Urban AC

It seems like more should fit on the dial here too. 92.5, 103.7 and 107.9 jump out at me. I'm sure there are other good frequencies too... like 96.9 or 97.1.

Things are happening.

A license to cover has been filed for W295AP, the facility on 106.9 for WRNE. It's a highly directional signal from what appears to be the Cat Country tower in BFE but it looks like it covers most of the metro north of I-10. I am hearing zippo in Foley, though, so it may be a paper filing only. The next app in line is for the Industrial Blvd. tower in Pensacola so it shouldn't been too many more months before this one becomes active. The pattern shown on my website is the app, not the "currently licensed" one. Somehow this directional deal slipped through the cracks but can be seen here.

Also, I am hearing W266AL on 101.1 very clearly in Foley. It's relaying WBHY-FM for the time being. It appears to be broadcasting from the TV 44 tower. I wouldn't be surprised if this one's audible in some parts of Pensacola already. Its next move is to the WBSR tower in town with 140 watts.

Things are starting to happen. Slowly, like molasses in January. :)

Are you sure that's the Cat tower? I was sure Cat's tower was south of I-10... even south of Seminole. Guess I shouldn't be lazy and just go look it up.

Are you following the progress of WNRP's move of 106.5 to their tower on Palafox too? For a little while I was thinking WRNE and ADX were swapping 106.5 for 106.9 basing that assumption on 106.9's hop to the Cat tower. WRNE deserves the 106.9 frequency. I have a feeling 106.5 is going to take a ton of interference from Mobile, especially north of I-10 and in West P'cola... but if their target is the Pensacola city limits and Gulf Breeze, 106.5 should work ok.

I'm 100% positive. I don't think the spacing would have worked with a tower south of I-10. This one is off Old Pensacola Road a piece down from the Gateswood community. The only way to get to it from Pensacola as far as I know is to go through Cantonment and Barrineau Park and head out into the country.

I've been pretty close to it before; it definitely not as tall as the ones further west down the highway but it seems to perform OK for the Pensacola area.

I peeked in on 106.9 in Perdido Key, Orange Beach and up the Beach Express this evening and heard bupkis. 101.1 is on and actually pretty strong, although I did get some bleedover from TK 101 on my little Insignia portable. TK's HD is off again so the analog is bleeding everywhere again on that little radio. 101.1 stopped the seek feature from all the way down in Orange Beach; that's pretty impressive performance IMHO.

The 106.5 translator is new to me but I'll add it to my website since it'll be moving into the Pensacola area. I guess the interference will depend on what WAVH does over in Mobile. They're still running low power on their STA as far as I know so if it were to move in now we won't get a good idea of how bad it might be. I wouldn't think WAVH will stop short of getting back as much of their old coverage area as possible, and I can't help but think that there will be some issues east of Elberta where FM Talk 106.5 was weak but otherwise listenable in the past. You know it only takes a few complaints to get a translator shut down, even when it's way out of the protected coverage area of the bigger station… so that 106.5 translator is, at least in my opinion, on shaky ground.

The 106.5 translator will be on a very short tower and historically 106.5 from Mobile has never had a useable/listenable signal east of the FL state line. I doubt Mobile will get any interference from Pensacola's 106.5 translator and I doubt anyone in Florida knows or cares about 106.5 in Mobile.

Why are you moving to FL Zach?

"It'll be moving to the Pensacola area...". Of course I thought I read "I'll be moving to the Pensacola area..."

What's 101.1 rebroadcasting now?

You know, Power 88 has listeners and a poor signal in Pensacola. Maybe they should keep one of the translators to boost power in P'cola.

Just noting that the 101.1 translator's signal is indeed reaching Pensacola. I picked it up on the east side (32503) and carried a scratchy but still listenable signal to Gulf Breeze (32561) before I tired of listening and flipped over to the Rocket. I changed the channel just in time because the Rocket had just started playing The Clash... answering the age old question, "Should I stay or should I go?"

The folks at Goforth must be OK with what they have in Power 88's performance because the app for the move-in to Pensacola already lists WBSR as the parent. I've never bothered to check WBHY-FM's signal in Pensacola because it doesn't appeal to me, but now that I think back I don't recall ever hearing it there during bandscans.

10-15 years back Power 88 was running a separate pledge drive to fund a power upgrade to 100kw and maximize their signal. I know the drive lasted for several years and for all I know it's still going on... But no signal upgrade has yet to take place and for all I know Power 88 may now be stuck with what they've got on 88.5 at this point.

88.5's signal is 10x as strong as 101.1's in P'cola today.

You say 101.1 is coming from the WJTC tower? That's what, 1200 feet or so 30 miles out from downtown P'cola?

106.5 and 106.9 are both still quiet. It seems kinda strange we don't have any translators trying to move in on frequencies below 101.1. Any idea why? Lots of quiet channels on that end of the dial.
