NERW has learned some of the key details of the arrangement, and it includes the shutdown of WUHF's quasi-local "News Central" 10 PM newscast. That program will go off the air September 1, with 26 of WUHF's employees (including news anchors Melanie Barnas and Ty Chandler) joining the staff of WROC and 26 more losing their jobs. I wouldn't be surprised if the re-launched WUHF-31 local news premierees in late October, around the time of the World Series. This is great news as long as Sinclair keeps their editorial mitts off of it. Finally Channel 31 viewers will get a credible newscast without "The Point" and Channel 8 news gets to introduce themselves to the younger skewing Fox affiliate audience. Hello? Having WROC produce another Newscast makes me laugh. They can't get themselves out of the basement. The best thing they can do when they take over at Fox is to move the Simpsons out of the 6pm time slot so it will stop killing the News at 6Pm on WROC.....

Channel 8 wasn’t going anywhere at 6 and 11pm up against Channels 10 and 13 and it wasn’t because they couldn’t compete. 8 has managed to ‘break’ plenty of stories over the past few years. It’s just that both 10 and 13’s audiences are so entrenched and that 8 didn’t have enough reporters in the field.
By associating itself with WUHF, Channel 8’s news department not only will have the only 10:00 PM over-the-air TV newscast, but their news department will increase in size.

I agree with Mark on this one. A few more bodies in the newsroom can only help channel 8, and if they're smart, they can leverage the Fox 10 PM audience to help promote the rest of the channel 8 news programming. Can the combined resources of 8 and 31 finally provide the critical mass to compete with 10 and 13? It certainly can't hurt, anyway.

I agree with Mark on this one. A few more bodies in the newsroom can only help channel 8, and if they're smart, they can leverage the Fox 10 PM audience to help promote the rest of the channel 8 news programming. Can the combined resources of 8 and 31 finally provide the critical mass to compete with 10 and 13? It certainly can't hurt, anyway.

Not really. If there's stilla FOX 10pm new, it won't feature channel 8 personell. You'll basically have two seperate products, only a watered down version at Ch. 31 (Two people doing what 4 used to)

Uh,... no. The PURPOSE of this "merger" was to find a way to increase profits by basically running two TV stations with the staff of one TV station.
Think about it. Sinclair now owns a TV station and doesn't pay anyone to work there. How's THAT for decreasing overhead and improving the bottom line?
8 gets a cut of the revenue for managing sales and news programming, & is able to leverage the local buys for FOX and CBS prime (which together have the bulk of the coveted demos). In addition, they'll be selling all the NFL football broadcasts (with the acception of the foundering Monday Night product on ABC and the ESPN games ,of course)
