WROD

What is happening at Wrod the last I personally knew was they just moved the New Smyrna beach station in the Sunshine park Mall studios and Tony Welch was begging me to jump ship I did not take the job because I figured out Welch was just trying to save his job hiring me to work at WROD I shot Welch an email informing him I knew what he was up to I guess I was right he was out the door in less than 3 months

The last information I have on WROD is they were recently sold a few months ago for $750k and the studios were moved to a new location. I don't know where they moved, but I think it may be the Volusia Mall or possibly one of the other shopping strips.

Additionally they are adding some talk programming and updating the music to include more oldies although the format is supposed to remain, for the most part, adult standards. News wise, the new owners dropped the ABC/Information network and Paul Harvey in favor of adding NBC Radio News from Westwood One.

CBS, which was recently dropped from WNDB is heading over to WPUL-AM 1590...

Be on the lookout for even more changes in Daytona Beach radio after the first of the year. There's much more forthcoming that I will reserve comment on for now...

I heard WROD has to move it's tower from it's present site. I think they recently had installed a new replacement tower earlier this year. If this is true, and they have to get off of what I think they call City Island, I wouldn't think they would get another wetlands/marsh site to put a replacement tower on. And WROD I think is somewhere nearly a half-wave tower. They will lose signal by being inland, and more speculation on my part but it would go to reason a replacement tower would be more in the likes of a quarter wave. They will lose signal coverage to some degree. That's just the view from the cheap seats... I empathize with the new ownership and wish them the best hope they make out well.

The studios for WROD are in the Sunshine Mall last I heard. WSBB Twelve Thirty The Beach (Oldies) had been relocated there until it was sold off in the recent past (a year ago??)... It's all just a blur now.

Was WROD sold seperately from the tower site? That would be the only reason that makes sense to me why WROD would need to find a new tower site... In my opinion, the original site near Beach Street is perfect for its signal considering its near water...

I thought WROD's tower was 1/4 wave all along? Exactly how tall is it? The heighth will give you a reasonable idea of its wave... Obviously if the tower is about 400 feet, then most likely its 1/2 wave... Any shorter and its most likely 1/4 wave. Of course the best signal will come from a full wave tower, but WROD would need about 700+ feet to accomplish that.

I wonder why they couldn't make a go with WSBB? I thought the AM-AM duopoly set-up was rather unique, making it more competive with the other cluster in town.

According to the application they filed with the FCC they are proposing to build a new tower which is slightly to the north and slightly inland of their present tower location. The proposed tower will be 190 feet (57.9 m) tall with 23 degrees of top loading using a guy wire top hat. Minus the top loading they are proposing to go from 144.2 to 93.2 degrees. Because the site is irregular in shape (a triangle) it will not support a full 1/4 wave ground system.

The 5 mV/m daytime contour does lose some area but no population since the coverage loss is over unpopulated areas. The 20.6 mV/m nighttime interference free contour actually increases slightly and gains population (38,242 vs. 37,636).

That's very interesting... If the newly proposed tower site isn't large enough to accomodate the ground system at full 1/4 wave, it makes me wonder exactly how they will make it work? I realize they will still be able to operate with less than 1/4 wave grounding, but logic and basic electromagnetic physics would dictate there would be some signal compromise as a result of the shorter grounding system. Also, the sand and any phosphate (both common in Florida) that may be in the ground would play a big part in how well the signal will extend. These are all elements that can't aways be accurately predicted when the engineering, ground and field measurements are taken from a newly proposed site.

Hopefully for WROD, they will, indeed, benefit from the tower move and realize a population gain as predicted in the Form 301.

WROD's tower had to be replaced in '74 when a truck driving around the base area hit a guy set and the old tower popped up and fell down. They broadcasted from a makeshift tower on top of their building with 250 watts for weeks till their new taller tower, around 250 feet, was finish.
Having to move it does sound odd, but it is true. It seems other things are going on as otherwise. They well lose so much coverage. It is really too bad.

Heard that the impedance of the newer, shorter tower was horrible for WSBB. Really bad.

It makes me wonder why WSBB would move its tower since it had an exceptional signal at the original tower site.

I don't see anywhere in applications where WSBB wants to move their tower. They moved there offices and studio to Canal St. on the mainland a while ago.
Did you mean WROD moving their tower?

WROD has moved their tower SOUTH of their previous location still on an Island in the Halifax.

Skip Diegel is really doing a great job with WSBB...I love the Doo Wop on the weekends!!!

WROD's owners bought the station for the riverfront property...I would think they might jettison the station at the first available opportunity. Maybe Black Crow???

Not sure. whats the diif?
RAMA holds the License and harper has an L.M.A. to Operate the Station. if the L.M.A. falls thru RAMA re-takes (I believe).
