Is WROP-AM still silent??? Do the Ropers still own it??? Jeff Roper is now a D.J. in the Grensboro/Winston-Salem NC market. Did he sell or loose Big Fish Broadcasting???

Is it still dark now??? Does Big Fish Broacasting still own it? I thought that Jeff Roper (Jack of WSPA TV-7 son) was the owner with his wife. However, Jeff Roper is now a Morning Manat a Coutry/Western station in Greensboro, NC. Is Jack Roper associated with Big Fish Broadcasting?

Big Fish (Roper) had 2 am's and the FM. The Roper Greenwood AM was gobbled up by the other Greenwood AM (its late and the call letters have left my mind) and at last check were simulcasting -- for now. It was up aganist the 1 year silent deadline.

Last I heard the Belton AM is still dark. One rumor has it that it -may- not have property anymore. If anyone is near the Anderson Jockey Lot, ride by and look.

FCC shows it still licensed to Big Fish. It is listed as silent as of 6/1/09. That technically gives it until 6/1/10 to sign back on or forfeit the license. The Feds have been very lax on this given the economy. (just look at 1070)

Somebody needs to get it back running bare-bones and find a translator for it. This would make a nice, (but small) local Anderson station out of it.

What format are you planning on using on WROP-AM? Will you change the call letters?? What were the call letters back in the 1960`s and 1970`s? I know a few years ago, this staion reappered as WLUA-"We Love Anderson". They even movedthe studios right downtown Anderson in a storefrontigt near the courthouse. It was a religious station that had a fuzzy reception in Anderson. Do you plan to upgrad the transmitter? What shape is it now in?? Whee are the studios now?? Ar they back in Belton???

The last I saw it (bout 2 years ago) it was actually decent. It had a BE 1kw solid state transmitter, Optimod 9200 and a Enco DAD automation system. All this was installed in a international shipping container! Great security and salt water resistant!. There had been a hole cut out and a A/C unit installed. I have seen better, but for what little equipment an AM really needs at a transmitter site, it was acceptable.
No telling what it's like now.

Is WROP-AM now back on the air? What is the format? Are studios at the transmitter site?

Don't like bringing up old posts, but since I too would like to know the status of 1390 and since it's been a while, I'm guessing this license has been pulled by the feds. To address the question concerning the history, It signed on as WHPB in the mid 1950's. When WESC burned, WHPB had the largest country music library in the area and somebody...Wally I guess, came over and got all the music they had doubles of. The station employed several "famous" country and bluegrass musicians in the 60's. Charlie Moore was there for years. When Charlie died, Bob Hooper and the ESC staff raised money for his tombstone. Ansel Guthrie, a well known mandolin player was there off and on for years. Bobbie Jean White, a well known gospel singer, was there in the 70's and 80's. "beautiful" Bert Landreth, a d.j. from Pendleton, was at the station off and on from the 50's through the early 90's. Stan Woodward (WMTY AM/FM Greenwood) and Arthur Goodjoin (gosple singer) co-hosted a morning show in the 70's as well. In '78 Matt Phillips (WRIX) was managing the place and installed a Harris MW1 (P.O.S.) and a stereo 80 console and motorola C-Quam stereo equipment. He later took the stereo generator to WRIX. Somehow the original RCA transmitter ended up at WABV for parts. I think I still have the plate off of the transmitter. The studios and tower were originally on the Belton Honea Path Highway just outside of Belton. Station went southern gospel in the early 80's. Some falling out with Matt led to a silly and unwinable "gospel war" with WRIX-AM. Station survived on selling religious block programming then went dark in 1995 until purchased by Rob Bryson in '96. Jim Warren and I managed to get it back on the air for Rob. He changed the call letters and moved the transmitter to the Cheddar community near the jockey lot in a freight container that looked like something Harold Miller thought up. I don't really know why Jeff wanted it. I have always thought it would make a neat "personal toy" station like Randy has in Greenville. Did any of you guys buy it?

What format is WROP-AM now??? Is it still on the air???
