WROR: Loren and Wally sticking around for awhile

According to today's BostonRadioWatch.com which links it's story to the Greater Media website, WROR's Loren Owens and Wally Brine have signed new "longterm" contracts. No specifics (such as how many years) were mentioned.

Loren and Wally have been teamed together at 105.7FM for 26 years through multiple format changes and multiple personnel changes.

Personally, I've been listening to L&W on and off (mostly on but definitely not during the country years or from 95-2000 when I lived out of state) for a chunk of that 26 years.

Some things I remember off the top of my head:

-Wally doing double duty with his own afternoon show

-comic sidekick Joe Alaskey, the "Man of 1000 voices"

-L&W's race (against each other) around the world...twice

-comic sidekick Christian Paul, who passed away

-Wally's future wife, Jodi Winchester, doing the news

-Double news anchors, Nick Mills and Len Nalo

-Gay Vernon doing the news (she moved on to Magic 106.7)

-late traffic reporter "State Trooper Bill O'Connell in the Metro Police Mobile"

-listeners calling in just after the flip to country saying they hated the new format

-Loren and Wally for 4 hours in the morning and "The Music of Your Life" the other 20 hours of the day (the rest of the dj's had all been fired )

Anyone else??

Who knows....they've been through multiple formats and 4 call letter changes (WVBF/WCLB/WKLB/WROR) through the years...anything can happen.

Yes, but since Greater Media has been at the helm, the first "real" format that they did was WROR. Of course they had their failed attempt at Classic Rock, and decided go back a bit and become Classic Hits. But they still are more or less WROR anyway you slice it though.

That would be Len Mailloux, not Nalo...my buddy!..he currently works at the same college that I do and has some great pipes..we fight over VO jobs ;)

A very smart decision to keep Loren and Wally. This helps the station lock up some much needed revenue by not making a change. Longevity works great for the station. My management buddies inside the building tell me that the contract is for 3 years... and then who knows. And look for some tweeking on the format shortly.

This news is far from a surprise; Loren and Wally seem to be happy where they are, and, well, the station is pretty much built around them. The real question is what happens when they leave... I sense some insecurity inside 55 Morrissey that GM could very well pull the plug the day L&W retire. But until then, which we now know is a while off, it seems that they'll just keep doing what they're doing.

Four call letter changes since 1971? That's pretty good in my book.

I've never understood the attraction to them, small market radio IMHO... and Men From Maine.... cripes.

I always thought they had nekid pics of Virginia B. Fairbanks in a safe deposit box that allowed them to keep thier jobs.

( if you are asking who she is you are in need of a Boston radio history lesson, or are under 30)

Total speculation here. Could they have an interest in the station (Greater Media)? Could Richard Fairbanks have sold/given them some stock options years ago that carried over?

Could be they still pull in the money and why mess with what is working. They either are doing something right or they have something to offer.

Look at all the "side-kicks" that have come and gone, and even came back (Tom Doyle comes to mind.) Either way 26 years on the same station is a good feat.

just goes to show you that if you have a great agent in this business like ed kleven, the sky is the limit....he'll even get big bucks for the voiceless gerry callahan...

They've always been the ratings cash cow for 105.7. Their morning show is tops among the area retro music stations. It beats Uncle Dale on 103.3, and it's way ahead of K&M on WZLX. They've got a consistent formula that they've long developed and stuck with, which a lot of people apparently seem to find to be funny... I find it extremely hokey myself, though I do prefer it to the obnoxiousness of K&M... Even when the rest of WROR's programming day was dying in the numbers, L&W were still on top among those stations in the morning.
