WROR, Unchallengeable?

Respectfully, sir, don’t tell me what I like and don’t like. I make that call. It’s like I can’t state my opinion about repetition and tight playlists without getting an argument from you.

Because you don't like being confronted with facts. Format radio is based on repetition. That's a fact. This isn't an argument. You want something, and I'm showing you the facts. Even satellite radio plays songs more often than WROR. All of these stations are among the most listened-to stations in all of radio. Radio is based on reaching the most people. So the things you don't like are the things that make radio successful. If that makes you angry, so be it. You can state your opinion all day long, on every message board you want. It won't change the facts, and it won't cause these successful radio stations to give you what you want.

I “don’t like being confronted with facts?” Who the hell are you to speak to me that way?

I said from this outset that this is a personal opinion and preference. I said at the outset that I fully understood every corporate talking point you’re repeating. And it isn’t about what sells well or makes the most money. I could care less. I want something that’s a compelling listen, and WROR isn’t it. Why can’t you accept one man’s opinion and otherwise leave me the hell alone?

I'm the guy who can see how many times radio stations play songs, for example. One fact you don't know. I have been working in the radio industry a long time, for a lot of different people, in different formats, and different cities. That's who the hell I am. Who the hell are you?

If you come to a public site and attack the industry I work for, you have to accept some blowback. If not, don't post here. People don't seem to understand that their freedom of speech doesn't mean everyone has to agree.

You’re someone who doesn’t seem to respect different opinions. I said over and over that I wasn’t arguing the merits of tight playlists and repetition. I told you I was stating a personal preference. But you won’t respect an opinion or a preference.

I am not slamming your industry. I’m giving an opinion. I’m also doing it without using personal attacks and put downs.

You can make all the claims you want. But you don’t use your real name on here and, as far as I know, you have never revealed your employer.

I never once said that everyone has to agree with me. I have said that I’m entitled to my opinion. As are you.

Finally, I’ve asked you to leave me alone. I wish you would respect that.

You’re someone who doesn’t seem to respect different opinions.

I'm very respectful. You're the one who put an angry emogi on my post. That's disrespectful to someone who's just trying to share experience and explain how things work.

This isn't about "corporate talking points." Take a look at KOAI, a 60s and 70s oldies radio station in Phoenix. They're owned by a small local owner, not a big corporate company. They play their top songs 9-10 times a week, and their playlist is about the same size as WZLX. I guess you'd find them boring, but they are a Top 5 station. This is why people get into radio. To have a popular station.

You’re not respectful at all. You tell me what I think. And then you insulted me by stating that I don’t want to hear the facts. Thirdly, I asked you twice to leave me alone and here we are.

I haven’t heard KOAI in several years, so I can’t comment. For the fifth time, I’m allowed my taste! You’re allowed your taste! And among the posters on this board, I bet I’m in the majority when it comes to finding WROR boring.

I bet I’m in the majority when it comes to finding WROR boring.

And yet it's the #1 station in Boston.

I've never told you what to think. If you find the #1 station boring, then that's up to you. I don't care. I don't work there. All I've done is explain WHY they do it, and compare what they do to everyone else, to demonstrate that's what the format does. And as you can see, WROR compares very well to other stations in the same format. So it's not just WROR.

And I said many times that I understand why they do what they do. End of story. I don’t like the station. And many here agree.

BigA is simply doing a reality check, based on the facts of how a station is popular and profitable.

The majority of people in the Boston market don't even listen to WROR; they cume about 15% of the population. Most of those who do not listen do so because they find some other station or stations more enjoyable. Mostly, they don't listen because they don't like or relate to the general kind of music WROR plays. It's not about the station being boring... it is about liking hip-hop or country or salsa or classical or AC more than the type, style and era of the WROR offering.

Yet, even so, WROR is the #2 station out of 96 signals in the MSA and is listened to by one out of every 6 people.

You don't like it. Understood. But it is a very well done station within its type and has great ratings to prove that point.

But I made clear that I understood the reality check and the metrics. It’s well done in terms of what’s needed to make money and earn ratings. I think I have the right - as others have done - to note how boring I find WROR. That’s all. Thanks for your input, sir.

The assumption many make is that these classic stations just play the same songs over & over with no variations or changes in frequency. That's not what we see by looking at the playlists in Mediabase. All of the stations I looked at, including WROR and WZLX, make changes to their playlists every week. They vary which songs get the most plays, and even replace songs for a week. If that's not enough, there's nothing more they can do.

No one is denying that. It’s still to repetitive and tight for my taste. End of story.
