WRPM-AM POPLARVILLE OFF AIR

COAST RADIO GROUP Gospel WRPM-A/POPLARVILLE, MS has gone dark, according to a report in the PICAYUNE ITEM.

The station went dark last THURSDAY, with Station Manager THOMAS VAUGHN telling the paper that he was told the shutdown came for economic reasons.

This Mississippi AM made it through Katrina – but not the recession of 2008-2009.
WRPM (1530) is the only station licensed to Poplarville, too. The Picayune Item paper says it was suddenly shut down by its parent last Thursday. Even the GM didn’t know something that drastic was coming. WRPM got its license in 1962 and went gospel in 1997. Now the station’s got a year to get back on the air – either under current owner Dowdy Broadcasting or a new operator. It’s got 10-kw daytime, except during critical hours for the two hours after sunrise and before sunset, when it drops down to 1-kw.

AM's are dropping everywhere. Some are not on the silent list(but they should be).But inquire about buying one of these. They get proud,if you know what i mean. Some go dark and just get the darn thing deleted (turn the license in)instead of facing any competition..

It's not just AM stations. WCMR 94.5 FM has been off the air for some time now. In fact, it has been off more often than on since being acquired by Horizon. They did away with the studio and any local presence and now the only indication the station still exists is the tower light. Pity!

Hmm... We have a translator here in Grenada on 103.1 that's been relaying WCMR. Except for every morning when WJOX from Birmingham blows in. ;)

Right now the translator is still on the air, staticy and relaying what sounds like the Supertalk affiliate on 94.3 up in Corinth. They could at least turn it off or aim it towards Memphis for a while or something.

Zack: You are living back in the 50's and 60's...the current attitude is : WHADDEVER,,most operators are using OPM, and really don't care. We are going to see (IMHO), the biggest shakeout in broadcast in 50 years! Too much , too many, too alike. It will be interesting. Our operations are striving to serve and survive...time will tell. But I plan to be there for the bell! Thanks :TOM:

Pardon my ignorance, but what is OPM?

OPM is a financial term meaning ": Other people's money!". IE, the reason for the
lackadasial attitude of the larger groups...JBI

Where do those "OP"-'s live these days anyway? Haven't seen anybody with any lately.....

Here is where to look: Doctors. Lawyers. "Financial advisors"...and the likes
of Madoff and his ilk...it's out there if you have a good "song and dance"...and no scruples. Will Rogers :"A fool is born every minute". In these days of massive greed, maybe MORE. Thanks JBI

J. Boyd,

You're a Mississippi legend, and I respect you greatly. But, I am confused by your previous statement.

I'm a lawyer, married to a doctor. Where, exactly, am I getting this "OPM?"
