WRQK is dying

WRQK is dying. Clear Channel now owns them. Clear Channel Operations Manager Keith Kennedy has roped in his new lackey Keith Hamilton as Program Director. Keith Hamilton as Program Director? :D Hahahahahahahahaha! :D GSM Dave Kelly is gone. Night jock Joe Kleon is gone. This is just the first day. Look for many more to be shown the door in the next few weeks. Watch as the station is turned to a pile of rubble. Any guesses as to who is next to be jobless, or how long Keith will last as PD?

I'm sure listeners can't wait until the station they love is voice tracked 75% of the time. Fortunately Keith H. will still be live, playing Poison's "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" during his "all request lunch" and blabbering about how great the Steelers are. Nah, he won't be live. He'll probably be in the building and still voice track his show. Wow what great radio. ::)

How sad to see another great local station taken over by the company most responsible for the ruination of radio. :'(

The above is correct, but if market scuttlebutt is to be believed, afternoon driver "Fishhead" also stays.

With the existing airing of "Bob and Tom", Mr. Hamilton and Mr. Fishhead ( :) ), that would make the station unchanged personality wise from 6 AM to 7 PM.

Our best wishes to Mr. Kleon, especially. Mr. Kelly is folding into the Cumulus Youngstown cluster, and I'm pretty sure Garrett Hart will land somewhere as a programmer for the company.

I turned on Rock 107 to see who they put on nights. It was some girl that said her name
every time she spoke. She read liners. Badly. She sounded like an amateur. Stiff and boring.

This is all a new PD and Clear Channel have to offer? Clear Channel had months to
prepare and this is what they put on the air? It sounded like a student's first
week on beonair.com. Not a stunning first move for the new PD. Did anyone even think
about what they were going to do when they took over?

This is Clear Channel moving in the right direction?

Re: WRQK is dying...where's Spaceman Scott?

But you can really sound excellent voice tracking your entire show! ;D What's the difference if you're live or not when you're too busy doing 5 other things in the building to answer the request line & goof around with time consuming callers and never get told whether you sound good, bad,mad or sad anyway? If you nor the listener are benefiting, you might as well take advantage of the state of the art :-X voice tracking equipment(great big giant aircheck machine) :D :D :D If the equipment is there to potentially make yourself sound great while you're down the hall doing other peoples jobs for them and getting nothing for it, employ that thing!"Too busy to interact? voice track!"(great t-shirt idea!) I used to like it when Spaceman Scott was on Rock 107 after his Buzzard era. Where's he at these days???

SOMEONE GIVE WRQK CPR ::), I think it can be saved. People, Relax and take a breath,
Everyone is jumping to conclusions!!!

ON ANOTHER NOTE

I'm giving WHOF 1 month to get to a Somewhat normal type of programming.
I think the major break in time will be about Feb 1st until the Akron/Canton Programming market area will start to develop a plan of what to do if any to the music formats.

Anyway.... Chill people.. Time and patience is the RULE!!!

Awww. Did I offend someone with my comments, so it was reported to the heavy-handed moderators for deletion?

So, I'll repeat myself: Welcome to the board former Cumulus/WRQK employees. I am sure we won't be seeing you guys contribute much. Unless it's to complain.

Some of you really need to thicken-up the skin. Or get out.

If I'm not mistaken, he's co-owner and/or co-manager of a big candy store in Cleveland. Seriously.

Hey Fred (Flintstone), Put down the Brontosaurus burger for a minute and try to realize that radio (like many other things in life) has changed. I suppose if it were up to you, everyone would still be carrying around a cassette "walk-man" player and listening to Air Supply. Radio = Business... Entertainment is secondary. And like all business, you must embrace modern technology, modern practices, and modern philosophies in order to grow and prosper.

Your disparaging comments only show your bitterness and your immaturity! :'(

If any station really wanted to mess with listeners (and those on message boards), they would be stunting. Usually, the format has already been determined when they go to air. A company like Clear Channel is not going to just allow a station to sign-on without a clue in the world on what the format is going to be. They actually spend resources to fully research the market to see what is the most viable -- ratings and financially for them. Just like any other business. I, for one, do not see them changing to something else.

Well that's the typical comment of ignorance. I hate to tell ya, but the company you used to work for (Cumulus) is considered one of the worst. And perhaps you'll finally get a clue and realize that radio is -- and always has been -- a business. Yeah, the technological advances that have consolidated alot of positions sucks, but it's not like radio is the only industry that has suffered employment downsizing because of technology.

As I said in an OMW comment on our report on the WHOF sign-on: Who "stunts" with an AC format? :D

Movie themes, animal noises, polka, sure. But AC? That's a format you end up with, not one you stunt with.

It would have been funny if the folks at Freedom Avenue put on "101.7 The Bull" just to mess with us for a while, but no. :D

Sometimes (often?) "stunting" is NOT done for the listeners. It IS done just for the media. That includes messing with the potential competition. Or getting ink in the paper or, if you are really lucky, local TV news. And/or the agencies and ad reps.

It goes back to an OLD programming philosophy: if they are paying more attention to YOU than they are their own station... YOU WIN!

Usually most stunts are for the radio market and not the listening public. Thank god people are starting to realize stunts for the most part are stupid.

as for WRQK...all you have to do is listen, you'll know this station has been on a decline for several years. While the music was okay, I was hearing the SAME imaging last week as I was 3 years ago.

A quick check of the books will reveal that WRQK has been number one in their target male demo(s) for longer than three years. Sure, cume fluctuates, but the rankers are still the same. Not much of a decline I would say. ;)

A quick example...Three years ago Nights had a 27.4 in a certain demo. They are now down to a 11.3, Yes Still #1, but the share is way down and WZKL, K105 or WONE are about to overtake them. That's a decline.
You can see this in almost ALL dayparts. WRQK was UNTOUCHABLE for years, until recently. Now they are a shell, I hope there is something left to rebuild, and it becomes a great rock station again, rather than what they are now.

The imaging blows...that was my original point. The same sweepers and promos for over a year.

and WTF did they host a bridal show for last weekend? How does that fit into a rock station? What's next? The tase of home cooking show?

Okay, okay... The imaging needs fixing now... no doubt, but Rock 107 is far from dead and I feel they can easily make a strong comeback. There were many problems in many different departments.

Bridal show??? No clue there, but I would bet it was some lame sales pitch and the fact that Cumulus had them all over the road. WONE is usually not too far behind anyway, and WZKL & K105 will never take the male rankers away from them or their shares... especially WZKL. Come on, it ain't happening!

And which "certain demo" was this? Unless it's their core demo, it's irrelevant.

I really hate to shake you from this dream you're having, but I am going to. Neither will "overtake" them. OTA radio listenership has been on the decline for a couple of years because people have more choices now than they had just a few years ago.

The iPod ring a bell? Sattelite radio? Let's not forget people are busier nowadays.

And that is a matter of personal opinion. Their ratings are still good and apparently still untouchable because if they were, WONE would be beating them. Or someone else would've changed formats and beat them.

The imaging blows...that was my original point. The same sweepers and promos for over a year.
And the Average Joe/Jane listener can careless about imaging. THAT is what is important. The listener. Not radio geeks opinion. Of course we'll notice this stuff.

You mean women don't listen to rock music??!! Alerting CNN now.... ::) There's absolutely nothing wrong with advertising a Bridal show on a rock station. Further proves how out-of-touch some of you are.

Wasn't Keith Hamilton the WRQK Production Director? Wasn't he in charge of imaging? If so, why wasn't the imaging updated in the last year? Did his 4 hour radio show take too much time?

Someone who has slacked for years at his job doesn't deserve to be promoted to Program Director.

Unless his good friend is Clear Channel Ops Manager Keith Kennedy. Then he is the perfect choice.

It is not what you know at Freedom Avenue. It is who you know and the amount of butt you are willing to kiss.
