WRSC In Late 60s

Here's a second for the Train Station. Right across the parking lot from WMAJ, with cheesesteaks and drinks ready for the end of a long day. Used to be a chain or local burger joint called Luv's or Wuv's that I liked ('79-'81).

There was a steakhouse restaurant kitty corner from the station, next to the movie theatre (where Tod Jeffers introduced me to the wonders of Airplane when it first came out). Our GM, a fellow named Mark Something, took me and PD Warren Williams there for a steak as a reward for anchoring for 4 hours straight on the day Reagan got shot. I had to anchor without help -- we had just dropped ABC and had no network. They drank shots of something. I had the steak.

I guess a steak was cheaper than paying for ABC.

Because I was a college student for most of that time (even though I was full-time at 'MAJ and 'XLR), my dining habits were usually confined to fast food joints and the occasional sticky bun.

I recall my roommate worked at a pizza joint on the main drag across from South Halls where a murder took place.

The Train Station - Release Valves & Buck a Pitcher Busch Bavarian after 9 PM on Thursday night. That's a 64 ounce pitcher, son!!!

Mr. Donut at 4 AM after a cold trot from Nittany dorms.

I did stringer work for WMAJ covering the 1974 Gubernatorial election from Shapp Headquarters in Philadelphia for the princely sum of $ 5. My first $ from a radio gig. Also worked at WDFM.

Still remember the WRSC sign off - Cat Stevens' "Moonshadow" followed by the extended Porky Pig's "that's all folks". Mike St. John & Super Max were on after Wendy Williams.

BTW, the steak place Dave went to was "The Arena" with a wonderful salad bar. Great place to impress a date in those days.

Gakski: Right you are! Tremendous cheesesteaks. Couldn't afford a date, even though I worked full time at WMAJ/WXLR and had a part-time gig at the same time for a while at WGMR doing commercials.

Just remembered the GM's name: Mark Harley.

There was also, at the time, a sales rep (name long since lost) who liked to show a picture of what he said was his girlfriend strapped to the underside of a Great Dane. Ew. Couldn't eat a cheesesteak if I wanted to after seeing that, and I certainly needed a drink at the Train Station afterwards.

Was the Release Valve the drink served in the large brandy snifter? My God the food, and not to take anything away from Fryman, but let me tell ya...their fries. People rave about the fries at the Spruce Creek Tavern, they wouldn't hold a greasy napkin to the frywagon or Train's.

Wait just a danged minute. I use real potatoes (I buy them from farmers in northern Cambria County), I cook them in peanut oil because that is better for you health wise and I may be switching to canola oil once I get some more information/prices/facts. I slice/cut the potatoes "on site" and if you're under 7, you get a plastic replica of an Idaho potato farmer. In fact, Satelite Man, I'll be in downtown Altoona for the Spring Fling extravaganza this May...you come by and try the fries again and if they're not the best...bar none...I will give you double your money back and some of those plastic potato farmers for your kids.

Hey you State College broadcasters...Does the Diner still offer their Thanksgiving Day dinner for like 50-cents. The fourth wife walked out a couple of months ago and I feel like a Tgiving dinner, but don't want to cook or pay a lot. Now another subject. I like to take issue with the issue, and not the individual...and I know this may not be the forum, but let's be honest Fryman. It seems more than a coincidence that the Frywagon ended up in this part of the state just days after Potter County health officials closed down a "Frywagon" citing numerous violations. The identity of the proprietor was not to be released with the condition ...quoting the health inspector, "he never operates his spoiled spuds and grease factory within county limits again". Something smells fishy, and it's not tainted cooking oil.

I have "no comment" on the Potter County incident. I suggest any queries be made to my Altoona attorney, R. Tom Forr Jr.
As for your Thanksgiving/marital woes Satelite Man...does Sheetz sell any kind of made-to-eat, ready-to-go Thanksgiving dinner with pressed turkey from turkey loaf? That may be an idea for you.
I remember the Christmas of 97 when your third wife left town with a long haul big rig driver, there were no eateries open, and I cracked open the fry wagon for you and we baked up some potatoes and doused them with sour cream dressing. I don't recall anything this sad since Lauren (edited) gambled his paycheck and Amtran had the donation boxes on their routes.

The Release Valve was served in a really large brandy snifter.

Worked with Wendy Williams at WDAD Indiana in '66 and '67. Must've been before he was in State College. Was sorry to see him leave 'cause Paul (Todd) Lucci came in as PD, and we didn't click. (BTW, I still have a tape of WMAJ-FM's first day on the air.) Jeff Hunt - Roanoke VA
